1998 CR-V

My friend took her CR-V to the dealer for a check engine light coming on. Her paperwork says:

"Per inspection retrieved code P0135 HO2S (B1) Heater Failure, Rec.02 Sensor"

Does something in that specify the failure is with the primary or secondary sensor? From what I've seen online there are two sensors or am I mistaken?

She was quoted $360 for the sensor (just the parts -- about $550 total) which I thought was out of line but I'm also thinking that price might be to replace both. Is it just best practice to do both at once?

I'm hoping that the actual failure is to one of the sensors and the dealer just gave her incomplete information by not narrowing down the problem to a specific sensor.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

The trouble code P0135 narrows it to the primary heated oxygen sensor (bank 1, sensor 1). There is a primary and secondary sensor. Just replace the primary sensor as needed.

Is it an EX, LX (2 wheel drive), or LX (4 wheel drive)? Auto or manual transmission? Calif. model or non-Calif. model?

Never mind on the trim level, etc., etc.

It looks like they all use the same Honda part number 36531-P3F-A01. Sometimes, different models use a different part. That's why I was first asking.

Honda list price is $273.20.

Generally, the Honda OEM O2 sensors are actually Denso. At oxygensensors.com, it is $53.26.

Thanks redbull. It's a CA car, 2wd (EX I believe) auto trans.
We'll get the sensor replaced right away -- her son has a friend that will probably do it for free. I've seen the Bosch sensors for about $75 which sounds a lot better.

Denso is better than the Bosch for the Hondas, also it's only $53.26 at the oxygensensors.com link I have above. I bought from them a couple of times, they are reputable. Denso is OEM.

It seems right out in the open, so a 22mm wrench/oxygen socket or an adjustable wrench should do it. Make sure the friend puts the anti-seize coating on the threads (if it is not already coated) before he installs it; so, that if it ever needs replacement, it can come out a lot easier.

Thanks again. That helps a bunch. I'll check out the Denso's. $20 is a good savinds. I doubt her son's friend could go over and get it done right away anyway so ordering it online shouldn't be a problem.
