Default 98 CR-V Timing Belt

We have a CR-V in here, just had belt replaced, very low idle, went to do a valve adjust and the timing belt is very loose between the two cams on the top side. Marks are lined up though, try to line them up diffferent and can get it tight (no slack), but timing marks are off.

Wrong belt?
Aftermarket belt?

Just something I haven't thought of?


Can use some idea's.

are you sure the cams are lined up on the right marks?
-loosen tensioner and adjust it down and tighten it up.
-install belt on crank and exhaust cam first and remove slack
-then side onto intake cam and aroung water pump and tensioner pulley.
-you should not have any slack on front of engine or between cam gears.
-loosen tensioner pulley a bit till it springs up. put a little pressure upwards on pulley to gain reasonable belt tension. tighten tensioner and check belt. you should have about 9/16" deflection.
-i like to run my belts a little tight so maybe 1/2" deflection

The non-vtec heads are finicky for whatever reason. BUT, if you pop the valve cover all the way off and get everything lined up to tdc there are holes in the no.1 cam caps that you can drop allen wrenches through into corresponding holes in the cams to hold them in place. Then loosen up your tensioner and wrap your timing belt in place. Pull the allen wrenches out, roll the crank forward (counter clockwise) until the the belt is tensioned, about three teeth, and tighten down the tensioner. Roll the whole thing over until the cams are back a no.1 tdc and make sure the marks line up. You should be good to go.

On my 2004 E, I changed my spark plugs two weeks ago, then the serpentine belt today after 151264 miles. The E would not stay in idle. and it would not start. I changed the battery (+4 yrs and lots of road trips), because of what the alternator may have done to the battery. Nope the new battery did not work. My E idled a few times at 500rpm then died. I adjusted the gas pedal cable. Bingo, the E purrs.

working on 98 cr-v,pulled valve cover and found 3 intake rockers laying in the head. luckily nothing was busted up and now the reason why is still out there somewhere. anyone? thank you and patience is my hobby

Exhaust valves? There was a problem in those years with the valve seats sinking into the head. The results is a valve that doesn't seal. Usually causes driveability but sometimes burns the valve, leaving it to hang open. Since the rocker is only captured by the spring and the cam, it can fall out if the valve is hung open.

Pull whichever cam has the affected valves below it. If any of the springs are lower than the rest those valves are hung open.





Keep in mind... the motor pictured above was sitting in a guy's backyard with that valve hung when I got it. Your combustion chamber should not look that bad.

The bad news... You most likely need a replacement head. Won't really be able to tell until you get it apart though.

The good news... Any p75 head will work. That means any 98-01 CR-V, and any 96-01 non-vtec Integra (RS, LS, GS, SE), they are all identical. Those heads can often be had for <$100 since people like to replace them with vtec heads.
