Re: 2002 crv how to change front drive axle shaft
From what I can tell, if you have an impact wrench you can remove the wheel and go after the axle nut. If you plan on attacking that thing manually you will want a large breaker bar. Remove the wheel to pop out the center of the hub, put it back on and mostly tighten a few lugs, drop the car back onto the ground and go after the axle nut. Once loosened jack the car back up, remove wheel, etc.
Biggest thing to watch out for is if the axle nut is staked or if it has a cotter pin, be careful seating the new shaft into the tranny (watch the splines and make sure you seat it all the way in), and make certain to compare the new shaft with the old before you install the new - have to be sure they are the exact same length. Also, to get the axle out of the wheel you may need to pound the spline a bit. If you are returning the shaft for core (going for re-manufactured) then you want to avoid mushrooming the head of the spline on that shaft. Likewise if you intend to keep the old shaft for a just in case spare. Roll the nut back on so it is flush and bang on the nut.
