Default 01 CRV temp gauge problems!

With the A/c and Heater off the Temp gauge stays at Normal (halfway). With A/c on its still normal but when I turn on Heat or Defrost the Temp drops to C instead of staying mid-way. Really bugs me because idk if its bad or not or if theres something to fix this. I know if it over heats its suppose to Rasie up IDK why its dropping.
Coolant level is ok just noticed this problem.

An older problem is the brake light stays on sometimes and the only way to get it off is to pop the hood and un screw the brake fluid container releasing the vacum.

sounds like the thermostat's stuck open. this happen just sitting at idle? or while driving?

for the brake light issue, remove the filter from the brake master cylinder reservoir. i had the same problem

id agree with the t stat being faulty. Does it take a long time to warm up in the first place? The t stat works by stopping/starting flow through the rad depending on engine temprature. If the engine is cold, it will stop the flow through the rad so the engine can warm up the coolant thats inside the engine quicker. When the engine is warm, it will start the flow through the rad to cool it down. The heater in your car uses the warm rad fluid and a fan to heat up the passenger compartment. If its winter out, your t stat is stuck open, and you have your heater on, youre going to have more cooling effect than warming of the engine which is why your temp would go down.

Happens more when i drive then at idle. If i have the heat on at start up the car take for ever to get to mid way range. Is it bad that the car is getting a cooling effect?

yes. with colder coolant temps, the ecu will run in open loop. that is, fixed fuel delivery perameters. ecu won't run in closed loop, receiving feedback from the o2 sensor, until coolant temps reach a certain level.

change out your thermostat with an new, oem unit
in short, it's bad for emissions, bad for the o2 and can damage the catalytic convertor
