Crank pulley removal tricks
Timing belt change on a B20Z: Does anyone know how to remove the crank pulley without Hondas $80.00 hex tool? (Not the spanner tool used on the early D15's - Already got one of those)

Re: Crank pulley removal tricks
if the motor is out of the car too Iv threaded in a 12mm bolt on the back side of the flywheel so It can't spin and use a large breaker bar. might work if in the car too just never done it that way.

most parts stores have the honda crank hex tool deal as a loan-a-tool. I know o'reilly's, and auto zone do here anyway.

Yeah I'm having the same problem with my D16Z6, I just bought the 50mm Hex head crank pulley holder off amazon for 25 bucks. I tried heating the bolt with propane, then took two breaker bars to it and it won't work. Oh yeah forgot to mention, the motor is on a engine stand.....I thought this was going to be easy.

You don't wont the bolt to expand you want the surrounding area to expand.

This is kinda a bad idea but I have done it and it works, make sure the car won't start like take ecu fuse out, put a wrench on the bolt set the wrench against the frame rail engine turns forward so put it on back side, have ur buddys stand back, and bump the starter, sounds crazy and kinda is but it does work for me, try this at own risk
starter + counter clockwise motor = kill yourself
best way is to get a nylon rope, put the #1 at TDC as usual, back the crank off then put some rope down the spark plug. 4-6" will do. *make sure the valves are on TDC and closed*. then turn it back and it locks up the motor nicely.

Re: Crank pulley removal tricks
W my z6 on a stand i got the longest breaker bar I could (24"), and a 6' piece of 1/4 x 2" flat bar steel, drilled two holes in the steel to bolt to the other end of the crank. Then rotate the crank untill the 6' piece of steel hit the ground, and then threw my massive 150lb body into it. Popped it off all by myself. Be carefull of the motor tipping over though...

After watching the video it doesn't seem so scary or crazy. Could all that resistance damage or kill your starter though? Just curious.

Keep in mind guys. The B series (that I know of) are reverse rotating engines. Doing this starter trick will be great.... For tightening the sht out of the bolt or breaking the head off! Then you can get the pulley out. But you will be screwed with the broken threads in the crank haha.

Re: Crank pulley removal tricks
My favorite way to remove a pulley bolt is with 1. An impact or 2. A friends impact.
if you are down on funds you can buy this gun at Harbor fright.

Direct imitation of snap-on's twin hammer. This POS is a good budget impact.

Yeah the motor will spin the wrong way and tighten the *** out of the bolt. Don't do it this way.

Re: Crank pulley removal tricks
But for other reasons I would not heat the pulley bolt.
Here is a hex tool one can make (with some effort) using plumbing supplies:

But if there was one for $25 already made, I would buy it. The homemade tool was kind of a lot of trouble. Works great though.

Re: Crank pulley removal tricks
couldn't you move the wrench to either side and have it hold? i no longer have to do this because i have the tool for both d and b series

Re: Crank pulley removal tricks
the most retard thing is sticking nylon in the spark plug hole. how retarded does that sound. your forcing all the weight on the piston and rod.
thats alot of force
starter trick works but only if the bolt is barely on. if its tight like most nuts it will never open with the starter yes ive tried on every honda and it didnt work ever.
one way that works is take the starter out and stick a screwdriver on the flywheel then loosen the nut. never had this fail.
there are many ways to do it.
dont heat the thing too much because the the pulley has rubber and the front seal is right there. it could cause a headache if heated improperly

I picked up the tool from NAPA for $45, but Autozone rents one as well. It might be a tool they need to order for you (2-4 days from order). It costs $36 and when you bring the tool back you get all your money back.
