Default Strange trouble codes at highway speeds (89 wagon d16a6)

My DD just started this problem where my check light comes on around 60+mph. I lose a bunch of power and slowly sink down to about 50mph (which I can only maintain by flooring the gas.)

Once I stop and restart the car, the light clears and everything runs just fine... that is until I try highway speeds again.

I get a code 9 (Cylinder 1 position) and a code 16 (fuel injector) and strangely two code 1s???

It looks like this... 1 blink *pause* 1 blink *pause* 9 blinks *pause* 16 blinks *pause* ...and loops from there

Any help of where to start with this would be appreciated, thanks.

Hmmmm! Two blink ones! That's weird and a half. I wish I could say one was a long blink, but the order is wrong and it's obvious you know how to read the codes properly.

The Cylinder position censor may be your distributor going bad. Definitely trouble shoot it if possible, or swap with a known good distributor.

As for the code 16, you can check the injectors for resistance and make sure they are all within spec.

The loss of power seems like something is no longer functioning at that speed. It's strange that it is only highway speed. Check for loose connections. I'll search for similar troubles and see what worked for them.

Off topic, but you DD is a Wagon? Score! Your CRX is awesome, but the wagon is cool too.

I forgot to mention one other detail, at no point during the loss of power do any of my cylinders stop firing, I would definitely notice if that was the case.

Okay, that's good to know.

I saw an instance where bad spark plugs were causing an issue with power loss. Idea on mileage on the plugs?

Also saw where a battery/alternator issue would cause power loss at highway speed (but I believe that was actual 'power' and not engine power).

For the injector, when was the last time you serviced the fuel filter? Could use a replacement.

The most common thing I have seen is the distributor has gone bad. See if you can check it with a known 'good' distributor. That could also be the reason for your first code (9). You could also take the cap and rotor off, inspect, and make sure everything is plugged in and tight. Could just be something coming loose internally.

I saw a couple instances where a bad knock sensor wire wasn't sending correct information to the ECU and causing issues at highway speed.

Loss of power could be a grounding issue. So check your 3 major grounds for corrosion and contact. Highway speed could cause heat and connectivity issues if they are loose.

Intermittent loss of power could be the main relay. I'm not sure if the symptoms are exactly like yours though.

Most common issue has been the distributor. I think that is your best bet since you are also throwing a distributor code when this issue arises. Check the dizzy out, check the wiring, and replace it to test.

Ok, thanks, I'll inspect the things you mentioned and see if I find anything.
