Default stock 91 dx cranks but wont start, no spark.

all original stock 91 dx hatch.

my sister bought this car several weeks ago. on a few occasions when she would stop the car, at a gas station for example, the car wouldnt start for a couple of minutes, regaurdless of how much she would crank it over.

yesterday she was driving and stalled out at an intersection, it hasnt started since. she had it pushed into a hotel parking lot, and after it sat for a few hours i did the following work on it there last night and got nowhere:

checked fuel pump, fuel pump turns on fine.

swapped in new main relay, still not starting.

pulled a spark plug wire and checked for spark, no spark.

checked all grounds in the engine bay, everything is secure as should be.

lightly tapped around at the distributor, and checked and cleaned out all the connections for the distributor/ignition system, still not starting.

replaced junky old rotor, cleaned out the contacts in the distributor cap.

swapped in new ignition ignitor module in the distributor, still not starting.

just for the hell of it i tried starting it while using jumper cables, still not statring.

im guessing its the coil in the distributor? thats what i was going to do for my next attempt.

any other suggestions?

im tired of working out in the cold night on this pos, please help!

It could be the whole distributor just up and farted out on you. I would replace it with a known good one, but fret not, DPFI distributors are worth pennies to the ounce

And i have one in my garage just sitting there waiting for a new home. Could it possibly be the ecu? Any codes?

well i just drove home from LA all night and found time to look at the car this morning.

throwing codes 15 & 16.

can somebody please tell me what these two codes are.

i've searched for quite some time and can't find obd 0 codes, only 1 and 2.

maybe its just the effects of going to disneyland all day, driving all night, 20 odd cig's, and several cups of coffee, but somebody please help!

depending on what these codes are, i think i might swap in the dizzy from my dad's ef that i know works over to my sisters car, and if that fixes the problem, go buy a new dizzy and toss that in my dads car.

having two 91 dx's in the family is great... i don't want to waste any $$$ if im not positive that the dizzy is the culprit first.

My civic died once at a stop sign. Just as I was pulling out bam. Stopped. I had to jump out and push the damn thing back. Good thing it is a light car.
Anyway I took a plug wire off and stuck an old plug in the wire and put it on a ground and had someone try to start it no spark.
So I towed her home pulled out the chiltons and looked how to test the dizzy.
After I knew the specs I tested the coil and Bam. Nothing. Went to checkers dished out 93.00 for a new coil went home installed and started right up.

That is my story of a car not running.

Hope it helps.

can you please give the details for testing the coil?

i am almost positive that the coil is the culprit, and i'd like to check the one on the car, rather than swaping it out, swaping in the coil from my dads car, then swap that back to my dads car, then a new one into the original car with bad coil.

and of course buying a $100 part without testing or trying a part from my dads car is not an option.

thanks, thats the info i found as well, but due to the layout of the chart, it almost seemed as if those were just the codes for obd1.

I found it in my chiltons manual as far as outputs to check for from different wires and such. I also have access to the Honda Service Manuals from time to time if I need them.

update:

replaced the coil and the cap.

when i took the cap off i noticed that the coil was all fried inside of the orifice where the pin comes in from the cap. and i also noticed that the cap was missing the pin haha. it had snapped off at one time or another. it was completely gone. i figured this was probably the culprit for causing the coil to burn out too.

car started right up fine! but now it doesnt again!

my sister drove it around last night, and then to work this morning. when she came out of work this afternoon, same ****. cranks all day, wont start.

now its only code 16 - fuel injector failure. do these typically go out? i've never heard of them going out on anybodys civic, even with twice the miles of this car (only 124k!)

just seems unlikely to me.

if anybody has some injectors that will fit this dpfi pos though, please let me know.

i'd rather not buy them new, when plenty of you guys are probably just throwing them away anyways.

if this doesnt fix the car so it starts every damn time like it should, im selling the pos and buying a different civic. i'm not taking much of this random run around bs for a civic that my sister needs for commuting. my crazy project cars are one thing, but most any decent used civic you pick up should at least start every time.

update again.

i figured if i disconnected the battery power, and left it for awhile, the codes would clear and it would start up again.

i was correct, it did.

so we drove it home, it drove like crap and hesitated.

we shut it off when we got home, and tried to start it up again 30 seconds later...

not statring.

code 16 again.

so i suppose it really is an injector gone bad, we drove it home on one injector, the ecu knows this, and is protecting itself from us driving it on one injector and killing it.

so once again, does anybody have any obd0 dpfi injectors to sell to me? prefferably local.

When it doesn't start have you checked for spark again to make sure you are getting spark at all?
If so you could pull off the fuel line and get a coffee can or cut the top off of a coke can and prime some gas into it. Make sure can is clean though. This way you can check to see how good the gas is.
I worked on a 2001 civic last year that would hesitate and die and sometimes not start. I had to take tank off hand clean real well and add good gas then clean line up to fuel filter then when I started it up I revved to about 3500 rpm to clean out the **** in the injectors. After that it ran like a champ.

Maybe you just got some shitty gas.
Worth a look anyways.

Otherwise as soon as I complete my swap I will have dpfi injectors for sale.

Good luck
