Default Should I buy this CRX?

1985 CRX.
225150 miles
$395 + tax

The dealer said it spits out some white-ish smoke when the gas pedal is pressed. I'm guessing it is the head gasket or one of the valves. The smoke does not appear when it idles, however.

This is all of the information I have. Any idea what the problem MAY be, or how much it might cost (or how much work I may have to put into it) to fix?

I don't want to drop a b-series engine into it, but I'm not opposed to getting someone else's old HF engine and swapping it out if that could fix my problems.

Anyone have a HF engine (maybe from a 90 or 91) that they want to give away?

Oh, would a 90 HF engine even FIT in this thing?

If swapping is a bad idea, how much work can I get myself into replacing the head gasket and perhaps the valve covers?

As I've mentioned before, this is not going to be a "souped up" car at all. It's for high mileage and perhaps road trips.

Anyone else have an opinion about this?

I would stay away if it is just going to be a daily driver. It is carbeurated most likely and a 90 crx hf engine will not just drop in. It would need motor mounts and also require converting to fuel injection. So it would not be an ideal candidate for a swap. The head gasket is fairly easy to replace if you have a manual and some mechanical skills.

since this forum is more 2nd gen oriented...i would check out redpepperracing.com. I'm sure they could give you a 1st gen biased question. It looks pretty clean from the picture though...something you hardly ever seen on 1st gen crx's

I've had a few of both generations of crx's. The 88-91 models are a better built car in every way, as is performance. The 1st gen is a great puddle jumper thats fun and cheap to drive. It handles ok as weel, but the newer model is better and has way more parts avaialble.

check underneath for rust. i can see its been rearended so id check around that area too. the only engines that will just drop in are 84-87 crx/civic engines and the d16a1.

so instead of giving such a vauge answer, why dont you go on ahead and elaborate a little here...

I used to drive an 87 Civic Si with a B20B/VTEC and it kick ***...there is a TON of potential for the 1st gen CRX. As a daily driver if you want to keep it stock i would def. look into maybe a rebuild kit and freshen the motor up a bit. Thats a lot of miles on that beast.

90crxterror: and why not go with an 88-89 CRX?

If it floats your boat and your willing for the work associated with it, then I say go for it. Not enough sick 1st gens running around.

Offer him $150 since your going to have to repair it to smog it, and you gotta pay tax+licensing. Then spend another few hundred to get the motor rebuilt and you have a nice little dd.
