need advice on valve float, over rev, and compression test
I over reved my b16 the other day, took it to about 8200 to 8500 rpm or so, at least thats where it was when I looked. I didnt notice anything at the time, so when I got home I did a compression test and got from left to right looking at engine 200 190 190 190, which is pretty decent for a b16. my question is can a compression test or leak down test determine if anything was messed up by the over rev or is there anything else I can do? thanks

yes, if any of your valves were damaged during the over rev, you would see it it both tests. I think you're probably fine.

i agree that one trip to redline isnt going to hurt your engine.. but you may look into a rev limiter to keep you under where you need to be. those compression numbers are good.. so dont worry about it.

dude i wouldnt stress it at all if you werent totally bouncing off the rev limiter your fine.... you still hhad a 100 or so rpm till that

nexgen91: that's not even an over rev on a b16. seriously, that rev range (8200 to 8500)wouldn't have caused any malfunction, and your compression numbers look good, too.

B16's stock redline is at 8200k, if you have a chipped ecu, raising the rev limiter so that you can rev higher will not benefit you anything. Unless you have headwork and a tune with a dyno graph that shows your powerband, and indicates where the power drops, which initially tells you when to shift at, before the power drops. I would still shift at 8200k chipped ecu or not, with a stock head. But again you didn't mention if you have aftermarket valvetrain parts.

my experience
I have had valve float many times on my B16 (obd0 old skool) with worn down Ti retainers. The block was fine, but eventually I damaged the valve springs, valve seals, and rocker arm rods. One time valve float won't kill it. But i floated them for probably a 20 minutes (racetrack)
