Matsushita compressor clutch making rapid clacking noise

Re: Matsushita compressor clutch making rapid clacking noise
Thanks I plan on either using a clone or a original new sanden unit I have seen on ebay. The price between the two arent much different. I'm slowly collecting all the parts to switch over from my Matsushita.

Re: Matsushita compressor clutch making rapid clacking noise
Man I am glad to see this post. I have an 89 RT4WD wagon with the same issue. Clicking mostly at idle when hot. As soon as off idle it went away. Recently, I noticed that my refrigerant charge had dropped a bit and the clicking had continued beyond idle a bit. So, I think charge does have something to do with it. But, I am glad to see it is not a clutch issue or compressor issue. I am running Freeze12 refrigerant.

I had no idea a sanden bracket would be this hard to find. Nothing on ebay, and I've called every salvage yard within a 5 hour drive of me.
I've found aftermarket brackets, but so far only for B-series engines.

They look like this. The matsushita brackets look more like a solid plate.

GPD is also called simply "Global" brand sometimes in listings. Their TR70 is # 7511558, which you should be able to get for under $350 shipped.

This is where the Protector Set, Thermal lives. First remove all r134a.
I had to remove 6 screws to get it off 4 on the top and 2 long ones in the back then just give i a tap to brake it off.

Re: Matsushita compressor clutch making rapid clacking noise
I found alot of trash inside holding the valve open.
So i took it apart
Clean all the rocks
Put it back together and the pressure increase when i turned the clutch by hand.

Re: Matsushita compressor clutch making rapid clacking noise
I did a LOT of research on the noisy Matsushita compressor in my 89. I was never able to find any type of definitive reason for the noise. So, you are saying this part will fix the clicking noises? I would really like to hear more about this and how you know this might be the issue? Thanks!

Uh, if this fixes it, I'm definitely trying it. Did the system seem to perform better after you did this fix? Getting pretty damn annoying turning the AC off in drive throughs, and having people look at my damn car like it's falling apart lol.

Re: Matsushita compressor clutch making rapid clacking noise
Did u ever change to evaporator? Because I just purchase a 30lb tank of Johnsen's freon, and I noticed that the low side pressure drops very slow almost like there's no vacuum. the AC get very cold temps show at under 30 very cold. I change the expansion valve, accumulator and the condensor the AC pump i had before did this same noise so i got the reman pump and the same noise again the only the thing that i see we both havent changed is the evaporator. Im going to change mind with a new evap and expansion valve in about a week from now 8-15-2019. YES 4 years old and still going. Lets fix this now

Re: Matsushita compressor clutch making rapid clacking noise
I notice when I overfilled the system it made a lot less ticking noise. I have to fill the system with the car off from the high side. when I try to fill from the low side with the car running AC compressor engage almost nothing goes in so that makes me think that the pump cannot pull a vacuum, but this cannot be so because the compressor still gets cold so it has pressure and with pressure you should pull a vacume unless the system has a block in it ... this means the ac will still get cold but have a hard time geting back to the pump.. But i could be crazy i have been massing with a lot of freon...lol

No this did not fix it and same here it sucks having AC and cant use it especially after you spend about $700 to get a thing working..So trust me I feel your pain and im working on it. Something you may not know about me when I start working on something it will get fixed..

Re: Matsushita compressor clutch making rapid clacking noise
Update:: I think I may have just solved this puzzle. I think this particular compressor that comes with the 91 CIVIC and the CRX is ONLY compatible with R12. The reason why R134 has smaller molecules then R12 to my understanding R134 is passing through the expansion valve too fast that explains why my low side pressure is too high and why do not have a vacuum on the low side aka High head pressure.. I will still change the evaporator and see how that goes but i dont think is going to make a difference. Next im getting R12A.. Side Note One 6 ounce can of r12a Replacement Refrigerant is equivalent to 15 oz. of HFC-134a & 17 oz. of CFC-R12. If my math is right thats thats about 14oz of r12a, and u can get a 18oz can on ebay for about $19.00

Re: Matsushita compressor clutch making rapid clacking noise
okay so I change the evaporator today, and like I thought the ticking is still there. I do have better vent temps now and better air flow. It also smells like the inside of a new refrigerator, but no change with the ticking sound The last thing im going to try is R12A before I take the compressor out and disassemble it so I can see what's inside.

Honestly, don't waste your energy on the matsushita. It's much better to retrofit a Sanden TRS090 in these cars. From what I've read, you can use the AC bracket off of a 96-00 Civic with the d-series engine. The biggest issue is with making the custom hoses to fit the Sanden compressor. I just haven't gone about doing that yet with mine, and likely won't since this car is too old to be an effective daily driver in all reality.
I've already been through my car with R12, parallel flow condensers, 4 different matsushita compressors, 2 different evaporators and none have made a damn difference. It's a shitty rebuild since no other compressor I've ever used has made that noise.
