illegal to sell catalytic converters?
my brother just got a 90 std hatch. the cat is on the headers on these models but for some reason my brothers car doesn't have a cat period. it has normal d15b2 headers, at least i believe so. goes down and connects to a little pipe thats probably 3-4 inches in length and then is straight piping until the axle back where it seems that the muffler was ripped off... he has an ebay exhaust laying around and wanted to put it on but theres nothing to connect it to because theres no cat in the middle of the car like on dx/si's. i told him to call the local junkyard and see how much they wanted for a cat off of another ed and the dude just told him its illegal to sell cats and closed the phone. any1 know if this is true or was he just being an ***?
thanks

as far as i know, TECHNICALY it is illegal for companies to sell use ones. not sure why. HOWEVER if you were to buy an exhaust on say c/l and i happened to come w a cat on it i think that's ok... get what i'm sayin?

it could be illegal to sell a used one. just get a universal cat from autozone or whatever for like 50-75 bucks. take it to a muffler shop, and they should hook it up for pretty low.

Yes, it is illegal in most, if not all states.
Go hit up a shady muffler shop, and have them weld on a high flow cat right after the header.
I payed $80 for mine, but the guy didn't give me a receipt cuz its illegal.
But who gives a ****.

they sell used ones on eBay. I think it depends on the state. I know it's the same with airbags it's illegal in some states to sell them(used undeployed) but they have them on eBay as well.

Yea its illegal for anyone to sell a used cat if its going to be intalled onto a vehicle. However its not illegal for you to remove a "defective" cat from a vehicle and sell it to a recycler since its never going to be used on a vehicle. At the junkyards around here all the cats are removed before the vehicle gets put on the lot.

Ive heard this before as well, may have something to do with them being burnt out and not functioning like there supposed to. I would never buy a used airbag thats way to sketchy for me....

I think you can sell a used one for recycling purposes. The ones I have seen typically are destroyed in some manner like the ends are cut off to the point where they can't be used.

Yea they recycle the precious metals inside the cat like Rhodium, Palladium, and Platinum. Soooo if and when you cut the cat off of your vehicle you can always sell it to a recycler to make a few bucks.
