Well inspect how it looks...does it look worn and falling apart at the edges or does it look crisp and fresh??

Well an old belt can still look new. Think about it what is worth more, a $25 belt or your engine. You will likely bend a lot of valves if it breaks. Age is as much a factor as miles when you consider if its time to replace the belt. If you know neither, its best to replace it. THe head gasket alone cost twice that and if you bend a valve you are into a LOT more money than $25 and an hour or so of your time.

the thing is, i think the timing belt was just done on my new engine, probably less than 10,000 miles ago. it it was, i wouldn't want to take the time and money to do it all again.

thanks, but i have a z6.

well then i guess if you knew for sure (a receipt or some proof) than you would be ok... but never take by word. i can say i changed my belt yesterday when in reality i never have (just an example)... so you choose the $25 or the new engine.

fine, if it'll make you happy i'll change my timing belt.

joking dude, relax.

like you said, if you can't be sure, don't take the risk. by the way, if the engine sits for a long while (we're talking months) is it normal for the seals to leak a little oil?
