Default How To Retard Timing?? Maybe Some Valve Adjustment Help

Can anyone please tell me how to retrd my timing 2 degrees? Im instaling a Zex Dry 65 shot so I need to retard it 2 degrees. Looking for help on a sohc zc or the stock d16a6.

My valves also seem to be ticking a bit so I think it would be best to adjust those and get them to spec, is it very hard? ive never tried to touch any of my internals.

ANy pics or guides, links would be amazinh.

THanks

Yes I searched, the only 1/2 descent thread I found was for a DOHC Vtec motor, and it didnt even really explain it very well

Once I take the valve cover off I really am lost lol, I dont know where to stick the feller gauge, I dont know how to get the cylinder to TDC

Found nothing on retarding an engine

retarding an engine 2 degrees=adjusting timing 2 degrees late...you'll need a timing light, make sure it has power and light is blinking, point it to your timing guide, usually located right by the crank pulley, then adjust your distributor accordingly.

that's what i thought also, you shouldnt be taking the valve cover off, period.

Invest in a Chiltons or Haynes manual and it will tell you how to adjust your timing. - Darrell

find out the direction your motor turns, (look at your crank pulley while motors running), to advance timing move the distributor opposite that direction your motor turns, then to retard simply do the opposite...to get the exact degree of adjustment, use a timing light.

I suggest you try taking it to a specialist cause if you dont do it right Youll have bigger problems, or study the haynes manual plenty of time til u get comfortable with trying to do it before you actually do it.

I think a shop would charge a fair bit of cash to do this would they not?

If it doesnt cost to much man, bring it to your mechanic because if you **** it up and spray, youre motor will be done

Should cost to much maybe 30 bucks? 1/2 hour of labour maybe

Actually I charge a little less then most shops and thats $80 including new valve cover gasket, and labor is charged in full hours . So that would be about 1 or 2 hrs. deppending on the shop.

80 bucks eh, thats not bad I guess. Ill be doing my e-test/safety check there and its a place where my family frequents and I got my blown head gasket done there

Maybe Ill get a slight price break

Can a shop retard my timing? Like im going in there to get an etest, can I say retard my timing 2 degrees when your done or is that illegal for them?

$80 is a rip off. The Gasket it only a couple of bucks and it takes about 5 min to do. Buy a timing light from AutoZone and spend 10 min to do it your self.

I think he meant for the valve adjustment

I dont know what youre talking about though, I dont think you need to remove the valve cover to change the timing

Maybe he can explain, and I wanna know if Im aloud to ask a mechanic to retard my timing 2 degrees

What the crap???? $80 bucks???? to loosen 3 bolts and plug a timing light up, then turn the dizzy. At the most that should take 15-20 mins.unless its your first time. Then you wanna play with it a little bit until you figure it out.It shouldnt cost no more than $30 because even $30 sounds like highway robbery to retard or advance the nignition timing. Now i understand the vavle adjustment. Even if you wanted to retard or advance the timing on your cam/s that does take a little more work but still not $80 bucks worth.

I just had my cylinder head rebuild (burnt a valve from a 55 shot zex dry kit) and i was wondering that to, im in the middle of taking the crank pulley off to get the timing cover off so i can align the cam sprocket with the crank at tdc. Isnt this right. Also there is only one way to put in the distribuotr correct?

that sounds funny. to advance at the dist. turn it to the firewall. to retard turn it to the radiator.
