Default financially sound choice - 1st or 2nd gen?

Around my area, pasadena, there's a lot of 1st gen crx's for sale for about 1500 and there's even some 87 si's. 2nd gen's are a lot harder to find around here and usually go from 2000 to 3000. i need a car within the month for casual driving (at first, work will be done in a few months when i have more money) and i was wondering if a 87 si for 1500 is a good buy for a first time driver/buyer/etc. like myself. opinions?
