EF Steering Rack...which is tightest (already searched)
Well depending on what post you look at, it is unclear which model has the best steering ratio. Basically, I have an HF, and I hear a lot of clunking and squeeking when driving. And the steering is definitely feeling loose. So I want to put a new rack in. It currently has a 235,000 mile old HF rack in there. I need to know which rack is best, the Quaife, SI, or HF. And I don't want to install P/S, this is for HPDE.

ive heard nothing but praise for the quaiffe. that is what i will be putting in at some point. i have an si rack right now, and it doesnt feel quick. i think its the same as the dx rack, in fact.

What all do I need to replace when I'm in there? I heard the rack ends are bad on EF's, which part is that? I figure I might as well freshen everything up while I'm in there.

quaife can be put in the DX or the HF directly. this is because of the difference in the pinion lengths, i know there's a company out there that makes an adaptor for the pinion to make the si rack work, can't remember who it was, might be theoldone. I got mine for just over 200 at http://www.kingmotorsports.com

you will want to replace #10 which is the rack end bushing, new bearing #7- but when i oredered that from honda it came with the pinion too and was really expensive, see if you cant find the bearing by itself somewhere else. you need numbers 8 and 35 also, you will have to break the seal in order to get your old parts out.

when i ordered the quaife rack n pinion it came with a new pinion bearing, this was 2 years ago from Brian Hasty @ Fastbrakes when they had just become available. Havn't had time yet to install it but it keeps laughing at me in the cardboard tube it came in in the corner of my room. I should get around to it in a few weeks.

dang that cheap. I thought it was a much more involved. how about the PS rack how much does it cost to rebuild?

Right. I got a Si rack for about $10, so I swapped it with for my Std. one. I saved the old one in case I ever go to the quaife. Anybody know if the the quaife is "too twitchy" on the streets?

neither did mine the first time it shipped, it came with the end cap missing off of my package, the rack threads full of mud and no pinion gear. Needless to say I sent it back and the one I received after that came with the new pinion bearing.

That probbly explains where the rumor came from, I was careful to word not to take what I said as gospel as it's something I read here, probbly back on the V1 FAQ.

In case you wanted to know you install it inline in your steering shaft, there are multiple ratios the most popular are 1.5-1 and 2-1
