Well I'm think it's time to get back into the whole honda scene once more. I've been thinking about it, and the bug is back. So while looking on craigslist for a good find i came across the goofy swap.

Now I know these engines suck, as my search came up with. But also the funny thing is there isn't too much info about the swap. I would do this swap for a last resort, but gets me thinking about the setup. Also you'll notice it's a true d17a2 by the val-cover, but the distributor has me confused, also the stock si intake manifold as well.

I looked and searched for possible write-ups on the swap and nothing... Anyone found any info on this swap? I figure it would be a good time waster for work.

that would be rediculous. at least you would know the engine itself should have fairly low miles. But from driving one of the newer civics with these engines....they suck *****. kinda like driving a stock vx or cx eg hatch with the stupid long gears

oh and i had no thoughts of even thinking about this car. I just thought the engine swap was a little odd. If i get back into the whole honda scene once more. I'm going to go with something like this...

Distributor is from a b16
Engine mounts used on this swap came from the EF. So to set the record on this swap it's pretty straight forward.

so since he pretty much did what everyone does on a ef with a single cam vtec swap would this one be faster than a d16z6, Y8????

I haven't really spent the time to research the d17, and what the possibilities are with it. It all comes down to the build and ultimately the tune. So if your going to tune it you'd wanna convert over to the obd1 system.

well i was just wondering stock.. no bolt ons or nothing... it seems pretty interesting i onced thought about this swap n asked around if this would bolt on like the other single cam vtec's do but everyone said they doubt it...

I want to know how the distributor was bolted on. Does the head have the threaded holes for it, and does it line up? I am guessing the stock cam has the slot for the distributor already.

ugh.... (shudder..) D17.... those were some dark years for the ole' civic. Good for grandma's and tree huggers and all... but as a Honda lover I try to forget those years happened.

so wait... the d17 looks like the the vx head set up, where it goes from 12 valve to 16 valve not from 16 valve to crazy mode... how is that beneficial? i mean if you're going for fuel economy i guess that's ok...

yeah but could you set it up to go from 16 valve to crazy mode or would you have to keep it that way

The combustion chambers don't look to bad on the d17 head. Little bump in compression. Also the intake ports look like they would need to be filled in with some devcon liquid aluminum, and then port matched.

d17a2 are slow, i spank does vtec motors on my single cam d15b2 all motor no vtec just mpi swapped
