Hello, I am buying my friends 91 CRX that was imported from Japan. It is right hand drive with the glass roof. Well... the roof is currently taped together but still there. I want to replace the roof with one that is removable very easy. Like a T-top or targa. It does not have to be made with glass, but was thinking of a couple of layers of plexi glass. Has anyone tryed to do this or knows of anyone that can inform me of what I will be getting myself into.

If you can find a way to keep it sealed while still being removable. Remember you would have to figure out the attachments. I think it would be too difficult.

Did you friend buy it cracked? Or did he manage to crack it? Just interested as to why these thing's are so prone to cracking.

i think they crack easy because they are about 18 years old.... i figure that most of them have seen a few windsheilds at this point and are lucky that the glass roof had lasted this long. are there no replacment parts for the all glass roof or something? i understand the car wasnt made here with that option, but i would think that a glass place could make a new one fairly easily.

i wonder how they get cracked too...but since the roof is reinforced (sorta) i think you could make your own targa-top fairly easily. A couple latches, brackets and some weatherstripping and it's done. I think the interior side would be the hard part, and maybe matching the curvature of the original roof/glass.

We have the technology...you can build it.

I had a Trans Am with t-tops that didn't leak, not quite the same as what you want, but it was a straightforward setup

If anyone were to wonder into the field of engineering once in a great while they might learn to understand the horrible physics of the glass roof system. In a nearly 20 year old chassis the flex of the chassis becomes infinite, therefore any greater flex in the chassis will break the weakest point on the car, hense the glass roof is now cracked.

Remember that just like the windshield on your car...there is some engineering used that designates a certain amount of rigidity to the car through the glass. Ever notice how flimsy a hatch is without glass? Well the same goes for a glass top crx. You will probably need to seriously reinforce the roof area if you plan on not having any glass there.

Most of these are cracked because they are manhandled before shipped over here. Things are stacked on top of them etc.

I had a glasstop in perfect condition and never had any issues.

Please put another piece of glass on there and keep it real.
