Wow! amazing write up, the exact same thing happend to me tonight, after about 5 minutes of searchings threads i found yours, 97SS. fixed the problem in 2 minutes with 2 pennies and some electrical tape. Thank you for the time spent on the DYI write up and everyone else that contibutes the to the treasure chest of knowledge on the forum.

lol well now I know why 2 of the brake lights turn on and why I found that little pointy mysterious thing by the pedals.

the plastic stopper covers the hole in the pedal so when you release the brake it pushes against the switch and turns the lights off.

Wish I'd searched and found this in the beginning. My trusty old '88 Civic LX had the "brakelight forever" problem. I assumed it was the switch and went the NAPA $20 route, and was puzzled. Fuseblock check, unhooking wires, bulbs, checking harnesses... a couple hours of work until I found this nice thread.

I didn't go back to NAPA for the missing pad (although I did find the remnants of the old one in the floorboard). I used a short bolt with lockwasher and nut without grinding the head down. I simply adjusted the ample length of the brakelight switch threaded shaft and used the locknut to lock it in place. It's adjusted right where I want it.

Now, if I could just stop this car from eating a rebuilt distributor every 6 months. Advance Auto has to eat it actually, since I bought the original one under the lifetime warranty.

dude, i know you posted this 2 years ago, but it is absolutely the best blog post i have ever seen in my life. i knew there was a problem with my integra, because the brake lights wouldnt go out unless i pushed in the switch. but then i couldnt figure out why there was a friggin' hole in the brake pedal. on my way to the dealership to get a new one tomorrow, thanks again.

Yeah I just use a short bolt and nut. Quick and simple and no problems.

Hey thanks for all the props guys. I know it's overkill with the pictures on such a simple fix but I always prefer pictures to long worded or short worded explanations. I'm glad this has helped out a lot of you guys the hassle of figuring it out or spending hard earned $$$ on non-repair parts like the switch.

I like the idea of pennies and what not but in the end I prefer the right part going in. I think if you measure or take your old piece over to a hardware store they probably sell the same/similar cap thing for a lot less.

This is a really great write up. This is what we should all do if we can. FYI that piece is also on your clutch. It broke on one of the rexs and I couldn't figure it out either till I reached under my pedal. I changed starters and ignition switches and nothing. Finally I felt the switch on the clutch and sure enough it started right up. I will try the bolt nut combo next time. Which bolt did you use?

Thanks for the write-up. After reading it, I went to the nearest hardware store (ACE) and bought an auto trim grommet for 69 cents. Did the job! I had been most worried about getting pulled over by the fuzz for those damn brake lights being on all the time.

yea i had the same problem except it happened to the one on the clutch and i spent 2 weeks tryin to figure out why my car wouldnt start

Can someone please indicate as to how this little braked stopper pad can be installed? I tried just popping it back into the hole, but there is no space for me to pop it back in. Do we need to do anything to the brake switch to create space so that we can pop the pad in?

Man you guys are awesome!!! I'm out of town and my wife just called me at 2am in the morning about her brake lights being on. (This crap always happen when I happen to go out of town)

She has a 2001 honda civic and it was exactly what you guys posted in the blog. The pictures were perfect. I told her exactly what to do and she super glued a quarter on there and it worked!!!

Haha damn bro same exact story. This just happened to me, so I googled it and found your thread! Thanks man! Luckily I had one of those break pedal stoppers sitting around. Would have never knew what the issue would be.

This happened to me on my DB1. Instead of ordering a new plug from Acura, I super-glued a penny over that hole. Problem solved, cost me $0.01 and some super-glue I found in my shop.

lol this happened to me last week so i put taped tiny rock on the pedal so it can hit the switch.
