Ok guys,

I'm thinking about getting another 4th gen hatch or a crx.

Which years are best? Please limit your suggestions to the years '88-'91.

Eventually it will get a transplant (b18), but for now will be a daily driver/ beater.

What year(s) are the lightest, etc? I've seen a web page that shows the earlier years of the crx's were lighter: example - '88 hf was the lightest...

I'm also interested in how suspension upgrades might work on earlier/ later year models...

For example, I've heard that the '88 hf had a trailing arm similar to the type R... Any little quirks which I should be thinking about? Structural rigidity, upgradeability, etc...

The 88 CRX HF is probably the lightest of the bunch. Depending on what swap/ brake upgrades you are looking to do, I would look at a DX or Si. All 88 cars have lower control arms similar to the Type-R, Makes them tailhappy at the limit due to passive toe-out. The 90-91 CRX Si have rear disks and to my limited knowledge, bigger front brakes. Yeah, I was looking at '91 my because I figure all the bugs will have been worked out by then... But the $ is higher, and they seem to be heavier than previous years. This car will be a sleeper, so nice interior is a plus, but I dunno... I'll replace the engine soon anyway, so maybe the older cars are better...

The 88 (possibly 89) CRXs have lighter doors than the later models. The seatbelts on the newer ones are built into the door, where on the earlier ones they mount to the roof above the frame.

not roof b pillar get a 88 if you can find a hf that's tiite took me 6 months if not buy the si one still lighter then all of the other dx and si's the only bad thing that i thought was kyb doesn't make rear shocks for the 88 years doesn't matter now since i got gab revo stroke 2's!! so 88

88 HF hands down.

no sunroof to leak or add weight. Makes it a lil bit firmer, that generation civic/crx have flimsy chassis. THe DX makes the wiring a little bit more difficult when it comes to swaps, but no biggie.

under 2000lbs w/out driver, can't beat that. 90's and 91's are freaking heavy...at least 200lbs.

i have a 88' CRX Hybrid Si...B16A as you can see...i'm pretty happy with what i have. Honestly think that this one is pretty good...if i'm not mistaken the suspension is better than the HF version...double wishbone, like the Type R. The HF is light..but not by much.
