Default 91 Hf VSS and speedo problem

Alright I have a 91 HF w/ a 91 SI tranny and a D16Z6 from a 95 SI. I was told by the guy I bought the car from that the speedo is all controlled mechanically, that their is no VSS sensor, just a speedo cable to the cluster.

The problem I am having is that my speedo just stopped working and now I have a cel, not sure what, but I have one. I was told by the guy I bought the car from that the speedo is all controlled mechanically, that their is no VSS sensor, just a speedo cable to the cluster. IS he correct, doesn't sound right to me, but I am new to this stuff.

Is there a VSS? If not how do I tell if the speedo cable is coming out of the tranny or is broke and how do I fix it?

Thank guys.

All the info you need in search:
https://honda-tech.com/zerosearch

But basically the vss is in gauge cluster. No the guy is not right, but he kind of is... but not really.

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1505300

search VSS with archived and EF options.

g'day

edit: Oh, and for the CEL, try search again for "CEL".

(not trying to be a jerk, just pointing ya in the right direction) (i'll leave the flaming to others)

Alright, I guess I will have to take a pic or something, because what the speedo is coming out of looks nothing like those. It looks more like a lever device attached to the tranny and the cable doesn't go into the tranny. Whatever it is hooked to must move to give the speedo its reading.

no i think your looking at the clutch cable towards the front of the car. yes there is a speedo cable and not a VSS. the cable is located in the back of the trany right behind the starter. and it should run to the middle of your firewall. hope that helps

Ah so the clutch cable is the cable that runs over top of the engine and into the firewall? I see now, I will look for the vss some more when I get off work.

Well I found the VSS. I pulled on the speedo cable the it came right out. Is it supposed to? Is that a sign that its snapped? I pushed it back in, but I doubt that did anything.

Problem is no junkyard around me hangs onto the motors or trannies. If the motors or trannies are good they sell them, if they are bad, they trash them.

Those clips don't come with a new speedo cable or VSS?
