91 CRX hard to start, sputters below 3000rpm
So, I've got a 1991 CRX Dx that I use for my winter car. I just picked it up about a month and a half ago. It ran fine when I first got it, but its started to have some problems. First is starting. Given, I live in North Dakota, and its cold as hell here, but its really hard to get it started in the morning. At first it was only on really cold nights, but now it seems like its every morning. It cranks just fine, but takes FOREVER for it to actually get started. And now its not only just when I first start it. Even when it gets warmed up, and I turn it off, its hard to start back up again.
Now, once I get it started, and I let it warm up a few minutes, it runs good. Accelerates fine, no power loss that I can tell. But the problems start once the car warms up, after about 10 minutes or so of driving. The idle will drop so low, that it almost stalls out. Then , when I step on the gas from a dead stop, there is virtually no power. I have to rev it up and slowly ride the clutch out to actually accelerate like a normal person.
Also, once it warms up, it runs really weak under 3000rpm. Sounds funny, sputtering, almost like its not firing right.
At first, I was thinking it was the fuel pump, but I'm not so sure anymore. As long as I keep it above 3000rpm, it runs fine. I figured, if it was the fuel pump, it would run fine on lower rpm, and struggle in the higher rpm.
The distributor is fairly new. The car is bone stock except for some dumbass 17" wheels that were on it when I bought it. The only thing thats happened was that the exhaust broke near the muffler, and I did a half assed weld job to hold it together while I wait to get a new exhaust. Not sure if that would effect anything. Also, there are no codes. Any ideas, before I start replacing everything?

Still looking for ideas. I picked up a fuel filter today, and am gonna install it once it gets above 0 here. The one thats in there looks relatively new. Also the dizzy looks pretty new, so I'm thinking that isnt the problem. Probably going to try new plugs and wires too.

Re: (crxboy909)
dont rule out the dizzy cause it looks new. alot of the time there remans that come in the box broken. it sounds like a dizzy problem. the exhaust might be a restriction but i doubt it would make it hard to start and it would also restrict through the entire rpm band not just below 3000. its a good idea to change the fuel filter just cause no one does, but i doubt it will fix your problem. it might be a fuel pump but also unlikely. i would guess dizzy.

well I replaced one spark plug (since I found it it my toolbox)because I found oil in the plug hole. Car ran 10x better, and I'm gonna assume that it will get better once I replace them all with new ones.

Re: (premo_si)
i might be far off, but i too personally believe it is your distributor. I have a b16a in my crx in need of a distributor. It finally threw the cel 9 code which is the CYP Sensor..
mine spuddered around 3250 rmps and below when i got my motor a year ago, now with the year gone it spudders worse...
its deffinently my dizzy
and i think its yours too.
but check spark plugs, spark plug wires
good luck to you...and me

hey , i have a 91 si, i just swapped the d16zc sohc in to my car about 5 months ago...im having the same problems. i thought it was my dizzy, so i replaced my entire ignition. but i was wrong my fuel pump was the problem. i put in a walbro 255 and a fuel filter, and i t cured it! i just recently finished working on an accord that had the same problem but it turned out that the tank jad so much rust and dirt in it that it was starvin' the motor of fuel. ___mitch____

the reason i wouldnt believe it would be a fuel pump is because it would starve the engine throughout the rpm band. it would seem like the problem would only get worse at higher rpms. but maybe the fuel pump is dumping to much fuel and it finally leans out enough to run good after 3000rpm. but than that would almost make it a fpr problem. hhhmmmmm

lol forgot I made this thread. I changed all the gaskets (like all the ones in the valve cover, and the ones at the bottom of the spark plug tubes) put new plugs in it, it ran great for a few days, then started to run like crap again. Took the plugs out, and there was oil in the plugs again, replaced everything again, double checked all the torque on the nuts and bolts, tried again, and got the same result. Pretty sure that I'm just gonna drop a new motor in it once I get some time off.
