89 civic automatic not shifting out of first gear
Was driving down the highway a few weeks ago now and it felt like the tranny just gave out. I was able to limp the car home in first gear, but it would not go in to second gear. I swapped out the transmission as the car already has 230,000 miles and the old one was slipping quite a bit. After the updated transmission was installed it was still not shifting out of first gear. I bought a new shift sensor and installed that and i am still having the same issue. Not sure what else it could be. Any ideas???

Any other ideas as to what the issue might be? Just wondering if it is worth putting more money into the car or hauling it to the junk yard....

Re: 89 civic automatic not shifting out of first gear
I took it to the mechanic in town and they checked out a few things electronically including the shift solenoid and the kick down on the pedal, but they had run out of options as to what it might be. I am already into it for about $750+ as the used tranny was $250 and labor and parts are around $500-$600 now. Was hoping the tranny was the issue. Is there any way it would have something to do with the ECU?

Getting any check engine light on your dash?
Can you manually shift gears using the gear selector?
.. and who is that in your avatar?

Yes, a CEL did come on, but I would have to call the mechanic as to what code it was giving them.
I can manually move through the gears, but none of them will take me out of first gear. It will wind until about 30-35mph and then I let off as I don't want to blow the engine up.

It would be helpful if you could provide what the code was.
Has the CEL returned? It would even be better if you could check the code yourself (it's easy) and not have to rely on the mechanics memory.
