Default won't go into reverse

Recently i've been having a lot of problems putting my car into reverse. Its a 94 civic 5sp. I've tried many things like putting the shifter into 1st then reverse, 2nd then reverse, 1st then 2nd then reverse, and putting it into reverse while moving forward at <1mph. Could this be a clutch master/slave cylinder problem, clutch itself or something internal in the transmission? All the other gears feel fine, maybe a little notchy. Trans fluid was changed 2 years ago when i change the input shaft bearing. Clutch feels a little soft and has probably 25k - 30k miles on it. What do you guys think?

thats what i've been doing, but that isn't how it should be. I am looking for a way to possibly cure the problem instead of just finding ways to live with it.

dropping it into fourth at a stop then into reverse isn't that big a deal - I think its because of the fact that there is no synchro for reverse

mine either does it flawlessly or bithes and grinds i found that the first gear roll up a foot then double clutch it to reverse works the best

I had this problem from day-1 with my D16Y5. Changed to Red Line MTL tranny fluid @ 15k and it helped a lot, but it never totally went away.

What I used to do is put it into reverse as far as it would go - let the clutch out a LITTLE while keeping pressure on the shifter - then push the clutch back in. That usually popped it all the way into reverse. This problem used to kinda come n' go for no reason. Weird!

Never had this problem with my B16A2...

I think it's just luck of the draw!

how loose is your shifter? i've had this problem in mine, put ALL new bushings in, and it went in reverse easily! whenever i park i leave it in first, then when i back up i put it in Reverse.

its just the way reverse is in honda's, you should change the tranny fluid it might help a little other then that, i would get use to it.

^It's true! The reverse idler gear is not synchro'd thus grinding sometimes...like I did this morning. LOL When my two Civics won't go immediately into reverse I throw it into 1st and ever so slightly pull it forward. While it's moving throw it into reverse...works 100% of the time.

it just depends on where i parked if i can get it in or not, since i live on a hill. if i ever have a problem, i just let out on the clutch a little and push it back in

That doesn't always work for me.

I checked my bushings on the shifter and they look alright. Not very much play. Although i don't really know what a bad bushing would be like.

hondas shifter bushings are tight( dont wobble very much), if you have any play they are usually wore out. or if you can move the shifter while in a gear ( left to right).

is it a swap cuz if so make sure ur linkage is right and you have good bushings cuz if not it will affect your shifting but most honda trannys do have this problem due to the lack of syncros in reverse, best way i found to get into reverse is 1st then reverse but like i said CHECK BUSHINGS! o and short shifters will cause this problem as well!! O AND CHANGE THE DAMN TRANS FLUID EVERY 15K!!! YOU WANNA RUIN IT OR KEEP IT? 2YRS DAMN MAN YOU SHOULD TAKE BETTER CARE OF THAT RIDE!!!!

that might be my problem, while in gear and moving the shifter can move left and right, probably about a half inch in either direction.

I have yet to see worn out shifter bushings prevent a honda from going into reverse, and I've seen shifters that were so loose you thought they were in neutral. They still shift fine, its just a little tricky to find the gears.

Sounds normal to me. Change your tranny fluid with Honda's new formula and it will help some. As ^^^ said, your reverse gear in hondas do not have syncros, so it your situation sounds normal.

i changed my shifter bushings and my transmission fluid. Everything seems to work a lot better but still occasionally has trouble getting in reverse.
