1997 Civic EX stock, A/T, 163k miles.

As of three days ago speedometer not working, automatic transmission shifting a bit differently than normal, slightly higher and rougher idle. CEL P0501 associated with speed sensor. Disconnected harness from speed sensor = no change.

I plan to pull one from a salvage yard and I'm wondering if it has to be pulled from an EX or can it be pulled from any 6th gen model?

Unfortunately, CockAuto sells mostly after-market parts like the one's you linked.
So, then I'd end up paying 5x (or possibly 10x if it's a pocket-part..wink,wink.) as much as salvaged and still be looking for another one within 6 months..lol

A CEL code does not tell you specifically what is wrong. It guides you to a circuit to test. For example, did you test fuse 15?

It's time to dust off the multimeter.

rockauto is pretty good. ive price compared to all auto parts stores and you can always spend the same money or less for name brands vs auto parts chinese rebranded markup junk

OP go get bent
remove plug
remove 2 10mm bolts
pull out sensor
put in sensor
replace 10mm bolts
plug sensor
drive car

Thanks Ron. I had a feeling you were going to mention fuse 15. I haven't tested yet. I did look in local salvage yards yesterday but, none to be had. I'll follow the procedure shown in replies by banned member (The bad-boy) Ron J. ..Lol.

There's a difference between name brand such as Dorman (****), OE (Honda) and OEM (Suppliers for Honda Factory). RockAuto mostly pimps aftermarket parts and sells few OEM parts. The OEM parts they do sell are generally more expensive then suppliers like HondaPartsNow, HondaPartsNetwork Majestic and other trusted OE/OEM Honda parts suppliers.

I'm not opposed to pounding a few brews while wrenching.

Salvage yard entrance = $3
Used speed sensor = $12
Easy fix = priceless

Fortunately, found exact same year, make, model with A/T that had the speed sensor still in it. Definitely, some differences among sensors within the same generation. Some gears spin clockwise, some spin counter-clockwise, and there are gear diameter differences. The gear splines on the failed part is worn pretty badly. The splines on the used replaced part look to be in very good condition.
