Default What are the differences between a D16Y5 (VTEC E) & D16Y8 (VTEC)?

I just bought my first civic (1998 HX). The CVT is great for gas but it is giving me trouble. I want to swap it out for a 5 speed. Then I noticed that my engine is also made for economy. What are the differences between a D16Y5 (VTEC E) & D16Y8 (VTEC)? And can I change parts on the Y5 to get more power? Thanks for reading.

I have heard that the hx's cam is more or aggressive or somthin... there is a big thread about that going on... I would say a good investment would be an EX tranny since it has the best gearing.

Cliff Notes:

HX: economy Vtec, it engages the second intake valve at like 2800 rpm.

EX: performance Vtec, changes intake lobe profile at vtec cross over point, above 4800 rpm.

i don't swear anything. All i am doing is looking at my options. for a while all i though was that the HX was crap. but now i know that it has some potential. I just need to find a way to harness it then You and I can talk drag.
