What is D3 on automatic civic?
My friend has a 96 Civic DX and he wanted to know what D3 is. He said He noticed a better engine response and better acceleration. Is that true? What is D3 used for? Uphill? Will it hurt the cars performance or engine?

D3 is drive three. It only uses the first three gears of the auto tranny...so technically It really wouldnt help performance...

When you are in D3 the tranny doesn't upshit into 4th gear, allowing you to wind out the 3rd gear, which normally in D4, it won't let you do.
It seems better because you actually taking atvantage of the whole 3rd gear.

So is it good then? He was asking me if it would hurt the engine cuz I had another friend who drove on 2 and the engine started smoking up...lol. It wouldnt smoke up the engine in D3 right?

Well, since it won't go to 4th gear I imagine that winding out 3rd constantly and keeping it there to drive at Hwy speeds might have an adverse effect.

d3 and d2 keeps ur car in 3rd and 2nd gear, respectively ... keepin the car in a gear means you can make the power on higher rpms. eats up gas quickly

Re: What is D3 on automatic civic? (tFUnK)
D3 - only use the first three gear of the transmission i believe
D2 - only use the second gear and second gear ONLY
according to the manual, if i remember correctly
D3 is for rain
D2 is for snow
NO it wont destory any engine unless you decide to hold it in D2 and drive it till fuel cut off...AND holding it there ....
you are basically telling the transmission that the highest gear is 3 or 2 and it wont shift into any gear higher then that. therefore you can hold the gear and accelerate past the usual shift point. you can have the same effect by WOT, the auto tranny will drop down a gear and you will be able to take it to redline ..
P.S. If you friend have a auto tranny .. just stick it in D4 and drive .. forget about D3 and 2

Re: What is D3 on automatic civic? (BAR-F1)
Auto trannies with four gears are usually configured in two general ways...
Most Hondas use P-R-N-D4-D3-2-L
Others (including the Honda CR-V and most Toyotas) go P-R-N-D-2-L, but instead of having a D3 and D4, they just have one D and an "overdrive button." With overdrive on, it's like in D4. With overdrive off, it's like D3, where only the first three gears will be used.
Unless you are towing something, or are in slippery areas, or are using engine braking when on a long downhill road, stick it in D4 or D with the overdrive on. It's that simple. Also, if you are at full throttle, the tranny will shift at or near redline for each gear.

Re: What is D3 on automatic civic? (VTEC)
Aiite. Say your going to race someone. You would have a better chance of going faster on D3 than D4 rite? I know its a gay *** questions but I'm curious to know. Because the fact that u can redline on D3 wouldnt that mean its good if your going to accellerate quicker?

Me I just drop it to D3 when ever I race and then when it winds out to where I want to go in the RPM's I just pop it to D4 and go . Hold it in 3rd just a bit longer than normal .

Won't really matter. If you use D4 ure going to wind the top of 1+2 gear. If u use D3, u make it to the top of 3rd. So what? You'd most likely have lost by then.

Re: What is D3 on automatic civic? (Civic LX 29)
automatics suck in every gear!
you can't go any faster by putting it in different gears. its computer controled to shift at hp. peak, so riding out d3 would drop over the power band slowing it down.
my automatic is a 95, 92-95 will let you put it in 1st. the newer years 96-00 won't let you do that because that makes the trany hot and will burn it up.
racing automatics is stuped any way because you can't win unless the other person misses a shift and by that time they are so far infront you still will not catch up.
