Default weird vacuum leak maybe? need some help diagnosing

i changed my intake manifold gasket because the old one was shot... i followed all instructions... drained coolant... unhooked all vacuum lines, intake, etc... removed intake manifold from car to scrape old gasket off and such (scraped old off head too)... etc etc etc... i put the new gasket on... tightened everything down to spec... hooked all vacuum lines up to where they go correctly (i labeled everything)... and now ive got a problem...

when i cold start the car... it will idle higher normally until it warms up... then it drops to about 800 rpm which is where it normally always idles at... so it looks cool... then as soon as i give it any gas... the rpms go up and when they fall back down they stop and idle around 1500 rpms and never go back down... when im driving the car seems a little jerky around certain lower rpms... if i drive it around and stop and then rev it... the rpms will go up, then drop down to about 800, then rise to 1500 and stay pretty consistent... slight jumping between 1400 and 1500...

if i sit at a red light too long with the idle like that.... the CEL light will come on... the car then runs like ****... it will idle at 1500... if i give it a little gas... it goes like this... 1500-1700-1500-1700-1500-1700-1500-1700... which it SHOULDNT because im giving it gas STEADILY... im not giving it and letting it off... it will do this same method until about 2k rpms... then all of a sudden it will just surge and go up to like 3k... i cant hold it steady anywhere between 1500 and 3000...

also, cruise control doesnt work...

im assuming this is a vacuum leak...ive tried looking for the problem but i just cant find it... i hear no abnormal noise from the vacuum system... all the hoses look and feel fine...

with all the stuff ive listed above anyone know symptoms or causes or things to check?

when i get the CEL i just unhook the battery for 5-8 seconds and that clears the CEL and the car runs alright again... while driving it normally on the road anywhere between 3krpm an dhigher it runs fine with no problems... just the lower rpms mostly at idle and at stops

thanks

So the idle is bouncing somewhat? Seems like alot is going on but overall from the way I read it there is some bouncing around 1500 rpm.

I had a problem very similar to this. Depending on the motor if you have a IACV you can check to see if it is the problem. Take of the intake from the TB, but your finger up against the wall towards the firewall you will feel a hole. Turn the car on and hit the gas to it will go up to 1500 and go to 1500-1700-1500-etc put your finger over that hole. IF the idling calms down to what it should be it could either be a) clogged IACV b)bad IACV

My car worked perfect before I changed the headgasket. Then I changed it and intake mani gasket and all of a sudden the idle was all messed.

I hope that helps, and hopefully im not reading what is going on the wrong way.
