THE ULTIMATE SLEEPER ENGINE: d15z1 build
as a side project thread of my d16b5/d16y5 project, I am creating this thread to document my block build.
[b\cliffs: Beefed up d15b in a d15z1 block with higher compression. and a ultra close ratio transmission[/b]
Brief history:
before I chose my 1.6 block setup, I knew that I wanted to build a d15z1 and rev it higher, due to the superior r/s ratio of the d15z1. So I actually picked up a d15z1 swap for 50 bucks. I put ex gears from a busted ex transmission into the vx transmission and sold it for $225. I then parted out the head/header which left me with a d15z1 block and a net profit of $255.
After my d16b5 detonated, I figured that it would be best to put a simple engine in my car and do some more studying/research on the art of tuning. I picked up a d15b for $200 semi-locally. Spent all weekend swapping the thing into my car and then realized that the motor was messed up. fortunately, I got my money back and got to keep the blown motor for all the lost time/frustration. So that leaves me with $255 and a messed up d15b and a d15z1 shortblock that had been out in the rain for months.
So here's what this project consists of. Since it's the d15b block that's screwed up, I'll basically swap blocks. However, if I'm going to go through all that effort, I'm gonna make sure this thing is fully rebuilt. oem pistons are well, oem pistons. For a cheap build, might as well bump the c/r up a little bit for "free" horsepower. jdm d15b has larger rod journals. And since the p08 d15b head appears to be in good condition, might as well use it while I get my vtec-e head built.
Here's the scoop:
d15z1 block
d15b crank (JDM only, with d16 sized rod journals)
d16z6 rods (actually the jdm d15b rods, but they're identical)
d17a7 pistons (os 0.25mm) (01-05 civic gx)
d16y8 headgasket
d15z1 oil cooler/warmer
ARP rod bolts
ARP head bolts
new timing belt
new water pump
trying to get honda bearings, if not honda, then ACL.
d15b/d16z6 cylinder head milled 0.010"
11.1:1 cr
1.62 r/s ratio (same as b17)
paired up with a d15b (d16z6) head for now and my crazy hybrid infinitude/quaife transmission. This should be an interesting setup which even when I do pop the hood, nobody will be able to tell. The only difference will be the p08 stamp instead of p07 on the head, and a y8 intake manifold. Which local b-series guys don't even know the difference anyways. Plus the vtec-e valve cover will throw them off. heheheh this will be interesting. Oh yeah, with my trans, When I rev this engine to 7500rpm, my rpms will only fall to 6200rpm muahahahhah!
in the mean time, I'll get my d16b5 head ported and install valve springs/retainers and get a custom cam. Can you say, 11.7:1cr coming soon? 8000rpm redline? Oh yes!
So far, I have a grand total of $4.02 in this build. Actually, I sold the vx 3rd gear for 30 bucks. So I guess I have -$25.98 in this build lol

So far, I have the d15z1 block torn down, and I am waiting on the pistons to get here.

good ****, I will try to keep up with this thread
Wouldn't that tranny be too short? only a 1000rpm drop in a shift sounds extreme. With something that short, then you are not taking advantage of that gears powerband... just thinking out loud here.

if worst comes to worst, I can put a 4.058 dx final drive in the trans (which i already have) instead of the 4.25.
with 205/50/15s, my gears end at the following rpms: (with 4.25 final)
1st = 37mph
2nd = 63mph
3rd = 77mph
4th = 96mph
5th = 121mph
very similar to a jdm k20a

awesome, basically my buildup but in a vx block that everyone will be suprised by. with this setup i am good for easy 14.5 on slicks and a jdm tranny with lsd. have fun with her!

i was gonna laugh at you and say you should have boosted, but then i remembered you where the first to successfully use the PMS's, congrades.

Re: (cambopheonix56)
awesome, when my Z1 is replaced by a b16, this will be what im doing aswell:
Vx motor:Free (came with the car)
Ex/Si tranny: 150 (included installation back when i wouldent dare attempt a tranny swap
JDM D15B longblock: ~150$ (wholesale pricing FTW)
so this is going to be my guide basicly

reading comprehension owns your ***. here's a hint. Get the expletive out of this thread.
jdm d15b's have 130hp on 87 octane, imagine what a bump in compression would give it, yes that's right, 9.3:1cr to 10.8:1cr.
plus, lightweight cars such as my 94cx isn't a overweight integra pig.
power/weight ratio comprehension is very interesting.

Thanks Bense. I think HT suffers from non-believers - kids who can read posts about people who tinker with engines and try to become them... knowingly they cannot afford any swaps so they collect as much shrouded information as possible and try to outwit people who have projects and/or know what they are doing. Good job children, good job.

Re: THE ULTIMATE SLEEPER ENGINE: d15z1 build (96CivicBoostCoupe)
okay, so this p08 head has definitely been milled.
so make that 11.15 : 1 cr
but I might add a layer from a used y8 headgasket for a slight decrease in compression. I want this thing siimple on the tuning.
BTW
I ordered some parts earlier:
ARP headstuds
ARP rod bolts
NGK ZRF6F-11 spark plugs
just gotta wait till I pull that d15b out of my car so i can inspect the crank and know which bearings to order. Although I could just drain the oil and drop the pan for now and figure out which bearings to get. Which I guess I'll just do that for now. Damn, I'm gonna have another huge hondapartsdeals.com order
