Default Throwout Bearing or Input Shaft Bearing?

So after searching the forum every thread I found people seemed to mix up the symptoms of the throwout bearing and input shaft bearing.

The noise I am getting sounds like a tin can rattling from around where the transmission is. But it only happens under load with my foot off the clutch pedal. At first it did it only when I was going up a hill in 2nd or 3rd, but now it does it mostly in 2nd or 3rd on flat ground. I can't seem to find a definite answer to determine which bearing it is however it seems pretty clear it is one of those two.

Also has anyone changed ether of these before... how long did it take you. I am going to be moving half way across the country, where I won't have access to a shop I can use in ten days, so I need to get this figured out asap.

If it's off the pedal= ISB. If the pedal is in= TOB

Here's a good DIY

Sounds like a bad ISB.

thanks, guys that is sort of what i was leaning to but i wanted to double check. I saw that link already it looks pretty good. but how similar will the d series tranny be to my b series?

Also is it correct to assume that while I have this out I mine as well replace the clutch etc?

BTW Ron it's good to see your still on here rocking this forum as usual. I have been so busy with school and work I haven't been on here in forever.

I've had this same problem for a while too. I'm thinking of saving up for a rebuilt tranny and getting a clutch kit for it. I think the synchros are nearly done. Well...enough with my problems, good luck with yours. haha
