Default Switching to 5w-30 from 5w-20 for winter?

My gf's 2003 Civic LX (d17a1) takes 5w-20 on the regular.
I switched over to 5w-30 for the winter.

Tell me if Im making any sense. Isnt it usually from 5w-30 to 10w-30? But her motor takes 5w-20 (owner's manual).

TIA.

What up b!!

I don't think it will make a difference going from 5w20 and 5w30. Heres a link that discusses it in detail. http://www.synlube.com/sae5w-20.htm

With that said, wouldn't you want less weight because oil is colder in winter, so the 20 would flow easier and more quickly throughout the engine in colder conditions. Which is what you would want, correct??

I personal use 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer. I don't mess with that '30'. But if the manual says what its says i don't see honda lying to the consumer.

5w20 is also what Honda uses to get everyone back into the dealership for oil changes and increase business because it's not readily available yet in the aftermarket. 5w30 is more than adequate as a substitute and will allow you to do your oil changes at home if you like.
