Steering wheel shakes at 75+ MPH
Hey peoples.
Been hitting the highway a few times lately and am now frustrated with my steering wheel shaking when I hit 75MPH or Higher. I had to have the front rotors replaced when I got this car and haven't really had problems out of them since.
Had snow tires on over the winter, had the old all weathers put back on by a local shop. I don't remember if the wheel was shaking with the winter tires b/c I didn't hit the highways during that season.
Anyway, list out possible reasons for this shaking and how to solve each given that:
- I am on stock 13" Wheels.
- I have not changed any suspension components myself but I think that the springs are excessively soft.
- This happens on straight road, curves, wherever it wants to exactly when I hit 75MPH and gets worse w/ increase in speed.
- This is a 92' Civic Sedan. DX.
Its keeping me from keeping up with traffic sometimes because it get so violent @ 80MPH.
Help me out please!

Re: Steering wheel shakes at 75+ MPH (Paprika)
The most common cause of steering wheel shake above 65 mph is tires out of balance. If your front tires have been balanced recently than many other things could cause the shake. Generally out of balance tires cause shake to begin at 65 mph and it increases with speed. As speed increases any thing out of balance in the drive train begins to make itself known. It can be out of balance drive shafts. It can be worn CV joints.
I notice with my 94 Coupe that there is no shake at 70 mph, it feels perfectly solid, but by 80 mph it doesn't feel as solid. A couple weeks ago I installed new front shocks but won't get on I-80 till next Saturday to see what it feels like at 80 to see if they helped.
Shake can be frustrating to fix. Start with tire balance.

Re: (Paprika)
Could be:
Unbalanced Tires
Unevenly worn tires
Bubble in tires
Out of Alignment
Bad Axle or part of it
Worn Bushings
Worn Tie Rod
Worn LBJ
Bent Suspension Component
Blown strut
Warped Rotor
Unevenly worn brake pad
Bent wheel
Bent sway bar
Some bolt that's loose
Something is fucked in your gear box/steering column

Re: Steering wheel shakes at 75+ MPH (G5C)
had a used car come into honda and we felt a serious shake at 75mph... alignment turned out to be fine, but one of the tires had about a quart of water in it. Rides like new now
BTW this was a 00 Civic EX with the 13" steelies, same as you

Good question. Maybe a faulty pump.
I'll have the alignment and balance checked out asap. Thanks guys!

Re: Steering wheel shakes at 75+ MPH (Paprika)
If you want to check the bushings, jack the car up and start pushing and pulling on the tires at different angles, then look at the bushings to see if any are bad. See if your brake rotors are warped. Check the tie rods. Check to see if the tires are balanced. Those are probabally the most common problems. I'm not sure if rotors will actually cause shaking, but at that high of speeds I'm imagining it might.
