steering rack making noise
94 DX with manual rack...It rattles over bumps.
I can grap it where the accordian boot is, right where it meets the rack, and it moves freely up and down...banging against the steel tube it is enclosed in...which is causing my rattle. Only the passenger side does this. Coincidentally, this is the side that has the longest section of tube...as the driver side is nearly right at the wheel.
Is this a common problem on these cars?
I'm just not sure if this is the result of the inner tie rod's being worn? From looking at the inner tie rods' I cannot tell exactly how to remove them...there isnt an obvious attachment or clamp or jam nut, etc...

which accordian? the one where it meets the cv axle? then you need a new axle.
if it's on the rack. then you need to pull the boot back( off) and you'll see how to remove teh inner tie rod. because that is your problem by what your explaining.
go get a new inner tie rod. get your *** to an alignment rack after. you do it , or you save for someone else to do it. ( hint) make freinds with mechanics.
i liked my customers while i worked as a tech. and yes i helped them out. trust me it's better to pay the tech directly than pay the dealer who'll pay the tech poop. while they get the mula.

Re: (Makako)
Okay, it isnt the CV joint. I know what a CV joint is.
As I said, the inner tie rod end has an accordian boot. It was already torn so I removed it.
There is no obvious way to remove the inner tie rod.
You stated that once I looked at it, I would be able to see how to remove it.
As I stated in my OP, this was not the case.
If you were a tech, then you can probably tell me how the inner tie rod is attached to the steering rack, yes?

no, not really
Funny thing is, my Haynes manual says nothing about the inner tie rod, only the outer.

Re: steering rack making noise (mattbatson)
Okay, I figured it out.
For anyone who needs to do this operation, here is what I found.
The inner tie rod ends screw into the end of the steering rack...rods?
The bitch is getting the old ones off.
Space is very limited and I ended up getting at them from above through the engine bay mostly.
You have to, best as I could figure, get a pipe wrench or something similar on the steering rack rod. You cannot let it turn as you twist the inner tie rods off with a wrench.
If you do, you can damage the rack.
I'm a big strong guy, and they were still a complete bitch to get off.
New boots were a rip off at advance auto at around 26bucks a peice....
