Sometimes no-start...Is my main relay bad? Pics included
Background: My bone stock '98 Civic LX has not started for me one time each of the last 3 days (each day I start the car 3-4 times, and only one time would it not start). Each time, it will keep cranking but won't start. Let it sit for a few minutes, then try a few more times and it will eventually start.
It's hard to troubleshoot since the no-start is not consistent. From my internetz research, I think the main relay is going out (after reading this http://techauto.awardspace.com/mainrelay.html ), however after looking at the main relay, the solder application seems OK. Would anybody agree?
I've looked at the No Start Diagnosis thread from the FAQ thread, and read all of RonJ's links regarding checking spark and fuel, but I can't do these checks unless my car isn't starting. I've been lucky that my car will eventually start, but would like to figure this out before it leaves me stranded.

Keep in mind that it's not very common for the main relay of 96-00 Civics to go bad. And the solder points in your main relay appear fine.
When the engine won't start:
1) Does the CEL remain on steady when the key is turned from off to ON(II) or does it turn off after 2 seconds?
2) Does the fuel pump fail to prime?
Also, have you tried cleaning and tightening the ground connection on the thermostat housing?

I will check these things the next time it doesn't start, and check the ground connection tonight.
Main purpose of the thread was to verify if main relay appeared to be OK, which you answered. Thanks for the quick reply.

New symptom today...car has started fine the past few days and seems to run the same, however the CEL came on when driving today.
Autozone pulled the code:
P0118 ECT sensor 1 circuit high voltage
Should I go ahead and replace the sensor, or are there other things to try/check first?

P0118 can be caused by (1) a bad ECT sensor, (2) bad ECT sensor wires, or (3) a bad ECU.
Start by measuring the resistance across the two ECT sensor terminals when the engine is fully warmed up. You should read 200-400 Ohms.

Is your distributor leaking oil from underneath it by any chance? The o-rings on the shaft of the distributors like to leak a lot n cause probs for that ECT.
