Smells like gas & CEL on
Everytime I turn the engine on I smell gas and I have CEL 3 MAP, 6 ECT water temp sensor, and 17 VSS Speed sensor.
Prior to this the car was running fine with no CEL.
Car history:
-99 lx recently swapped with 00 b16a2 two months ago using si ecu and tanabe catback. Car is running fine.
-a week ago I added engine cleaner to my gas after getting a full tank of 91 gas.
-friday I changed the tanabe catback with stock ex catback.
-friday I also change the oil and oil filter. 10w30.
-friday car was running fine, NO CEL, washed the engine bay.
-saturday car was just in the garage.
-sunday I pulled out the driveway and CEL went ON. I went to get a full tank of gas and went home. I started smelling gas. CEL was 16 Fuel Injector. When I start the engine there is a clicking sound.
-sunday I was fixing the wires on the ecu because I had problems with the ground wire. Anyways, now I have three CELs and the CEL 16 Fuel Injector is not one of them. I have CEL 3 MAP, 6 ECT water temp sensor, and 17 VSS Speed sensor. I still smell gas. I checked the MAP sensor and it is plugged properly.
I need help. Thanks.

Re: Smells like gas & CEL on
it sounds like you may have two separate problems to me. first of all you want to pin down where the fuel leak is coming from, since you can smell it then it is exposed which is potentially dangerous. check any fittings or joints for fuel leaks, if you have access to one use a sniffer. look at the fuel filter, fuel filter line to rail, both banjo fittings, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pressure regulator vacuum line, fuel injector gaskets, and i would expect everything from the firewall back is still probably untouched and ok. the sensor problem sounds like a common point where those circuits meet is malfunctioning. if you have access, use a wiring diagram and trace the common ground. or you can just look for main grounds for the engine harness and make sure they are ok. a few critical ones are the one on the thermostat housing, the one from the trans to the frame, from valve cover stud to rad support, and the contact surface between the engine and the trans casing (i've seen this area get buildup, cause high resistance, and trigger multiple codes because ground was poor.). it will probably be a single thing causing multiple DTC issues, if you just did a straight engine swap plug and play i would not assume you have 4 separate sensor issues. it'll most likely be something silly, hope this helps.

If the gas smell is from the exhaust then coupled with the MAP sensor code, you might have a vacuum leak. Check the MAP voltage to see what kind of vacuum you're generating.

Re: Smells like gas & CEL on
ok I cleared the ECU. Now I only have CEL 3 which is the MAP.
No signs of fuel leak in the bay.
I noticed there is a whishing sound on the engine when I turn the engine off.
Thanks

A parts store should be able to loan you one at no charge. Just tell them you want to test your MAP sensor before you buy one from them.

does that sound come from the throttle body? is your map the kind that bolts up to the TB? you can also tell if you have a medium to large size vacuum leak by idle speed. if the car idles a little high, it might already be near the limit of its compensation ability with the IACV. but yes you should own a meter anyway. i still suspect a ground, how is that ground on the thermostat housing?

if you want to test your MAP sensor, you need a vacuum gauge and you apply a set amount of vacuum to the sensor and it should read Xv. after you confirm your sensor is ok, you then check its voltage installed on car at idle to measure your vacuum, which should be translated to about 1v.

could be one problem, bad injector, shooting slightly too much foel, but not enough for hydro lock. I doesn't get burned or recirculated back to tank and exits the exhuast causing the sensor to read rich therefore the CEL came on. Check the CEL code and you'll have a better idea on what to look at

Re: Smells like gas & CEL on
thanks port and sol and everyone for all your help. I really appreciate it. I borrowed a map sensor from a friend's integra and the CEL for MAP is still on. On my way to autozone.

if your going out, do like S2integra said and see if you can get a hold of a code reader. the more thorough P0 code stored within the ECU will give you a better understanding of why the check engine light was triggered. how's that ground?

Re: Smells like gas & CEL on
1) Check for clogging of the throttle body port leading to the MAP sensor.
2) Unplug the MAP sensor connector. With the key in ON(II), do you measure 5V between these two connector terminals:

if you have the type of MAP which bolts up to the TB. you can see if you have a clog by checking the voltage on the MAP at idle (1v), there is also a rubber o-ring.

Re: Smells like gas & CEL on
Great! CEL is gone.
I think you're right port its all about the ground. Katman adviced to move my 2nd o2 wire from the pinout c18 (SG2 sensor ground) to pinout c7 (SG1 ground for MAP). CEL is gone BUT I still hear that whishing (frying) sound when I turn the engine off. I will take it for a test drive and be back.

Re: Smells like gas & CEL on
Thanks RonJ, Port, delsol, and S2
This has been a learning experience for me. I never knew a bad ground can produce so many different CELs. Now I know what to do next time this happens again which is to bump this thread. jk.
Thanks again.
