Default Shredded Alternator Belt

I just replaced an alternator belt on my gf's 98 Cvic. It started up fine, once it was driven the belt ended up getting shredded within like 2 miles. What would cause this, is the belt too lose, too tight? Anybody have any ideas? It wasn't too tight, if anything it woulda been lose i think, it wasn't really lose, but I couldn't get it any tighter and it seemed ok, and idle'd fine. Any ideas?

first off get an OE belt. not a cogged belt like that.
a good rule of thumb for adjusting the belt. tighten it till you can only twist it about half a turn.

something i noticed on my civic when my belt broke was the reason the belt broke in the first place... the idler pulley was chewed up. it ate the belt up and cut it. $30 for the pulley from honda and a new belt and i was good to go.

Good idea, i'll just go pick up an oem belt from honda, the idler pulley might be bad too, cuz the reason i had to replace it was cuz the one on there was all chewed up.

i did this same story the week before last- my belt broke so i replaced it. About 1/4 mile down the street my brand new belt starts whistling so i pull over and check it out and its fraying so i go home and find my pully has a nick in it..just got it replaced at a local shop for like 12 bucks

Is it JUST ME, or this belt on the picture IS NOT THE KIND OF BELT YOU CAN INSTALL ON THE 1998 CIVIC...

Correct me if I am wrong, but 1998 Civic uses Micro-V belts and THAT IS NOT MICRO-V ON THE PICTURE

Yep wrong belt. the groves in the crank pully act like knives and will tear that thing to shreds if you have that (wrong) belt in there. replace it and see what happens. Also my crank pully was broken on my car and shreded the belt before I even pulled out of the garage btw.

Oh ok, thast what I was thinking, cuz the belt isn't grooved, its got like checkmark grooves in it, i'm thinkin that has to be the problem. My gf baught the belt from autozone, she didn't know wtf she was looking for, and i'm dumb for not even thinkin about it. Oh well, i'll just go pick up a belt from honda and throw that on and see what happends.

Just buy Gates/TRW/Conti-tech/Mitsuboshi (and yes, it's not Mitsubishi, it's Mitsuboshi) or whatever... you do NOT need Honda OEM... it is NOT the timing belt so you don't have to be **** about it...

I had Gates for 25.000 miles before change and after all that time, the belt looked still in shape and strong without any visual damage...

But I just replaced it to have a piece of mind...

Alternator - 4PK800
A/C - 4PK820
PS - 4PK845

I thought that the OEM blet from Honda does have Mitsuboshi or whatever writen on them anyway? I'm pretty sure they do. I replaced the alternator belt on my Y8 about two months ago with a OEM belt from the Honda dealership. I'm almost positive it had that name or whatever writen on it. I'll have to check it later after work.

Ya, well I mean the belt from Honda is only $9 bucks. Not really that much more expensive, i don't know what my gf paid for the goodyear gatorback one, but it couldn't have been too much less.
