is the gauge t-tapped to the o2 sensor or to the ecu? if it's hooked up to the sensor, maybe the sensor may ge getting bad. . .

what ECU you running, how about the stock fuel pump dieing?????
Autometer A/F gauge must be all green under full throttle or else something is wrong. I tapped in at the ECU, D14 pin to be exact.

there is few ways you can adjust a mixture;
VAFC or some electronic gadget, fuel pressure regulator, ECU chip
all have some pros and cons. for cheapest way, if using a P28 is to just go with a ECU chip, and install it yourself.

Re: running lean!! how to fix? (shawnhayes)
thanks for the input. im swapping in a month or so anyways so if it is something with the motor so be it but if its the fuel pump i am gunna need a bigger one soon anyways. im most likely putting a obd1 LS in it and finding a vtec head and going from there. all motor this time FI next car. bigger fuel pump necessary for this application? i would think so but nobody around me has ls/vtec so i have no one to ask. thanks

I seem to be running extremely rich. When I peg it, the fuel mix goes to the next to last RICH bar on my AutoMeter A/F gauge... this may be normal...
But... on my D16Z6...
I get massive black crap built up on the back of my car. Within a week, my bumper is turned maroon. It's really nasty. The particles rub off though. Also, my exhaust spits black watery crap all the time, and smells rich also.
Any ideas? I've replaced my O2 sensor. My D16Z6 is running REALLY crappy. I get beat by DX hatches and DX CRX's all day long.
Also, check out this oil burning/rich fuel mix smoke:

Re: running lean!! how to fix? (zelifcam)
We had a discussion about this in class.. The instructor said that if your ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor is working properly, it'll deliver a lot of fuel and crank the fan on.
This is what I think could be going on. When you installed the meter, if one wire came from the O2 sensor and you grounded another wire for the meter, it could be giving the computer bogus readings and it is probably going into a Fail-Safe mode.. Because you see the ECU measures resistance from the ECT sensor. So if you connect to the O2 sensor in series or parallel, you could probably screw up the reading. Because the ECT looks to the O2 sensor once the engine reaches about 600 degrees or so.. And the ECU has a fixed parameter at which the O2 should be reading. So if the ECU sees a bogus reading from the O2 sensor, the ECT sensor won't acknowledge the O2 sensor's reading. So it then goes into it's fail-safe mode and turns on the fan and shoots out a lot of fuel. This is because the ECU doesn't know if the ECT sensor is working correctly or not. So it thinks that its really cold outside and it sends more fuel to the engine..
But that's just what I remember learning in class.. Good luck..
