Re: Reverse Whine (CooBlueDAB)
Its because its a straight cut gear.
Like a lot of racecars have straight cut gears, and dog box transmissions. The gears just make the whine sound.
NO, its not bad for the transmission.

Re: Reverse Whine (2KCivicSiR)
Straight gears instead of helical. In the old days (70's) all Rally cars had straight cut gears in their trannies. Straight cut gears have less parasitical power loss and are easier to shift without the clutch. Since we don't drive very fast in reverse straight cut gears are fine for reverse. We can handle the noise at low speeds.

Re: Reverse Whine (2KCivicSiR)
I've seen this question like 8 times. And this is the only one that got a straight answer. Good thread
I think pretty much *** FWD cars make that sound in reverse. My friends saturn did it when he had it in highschool. Good answer though

Re: Reverse Whine (murmur9)
Thanks
Almost all cars have straight cut gears for reverse. Helical gears are more expensive and weaker. The car in my avatar (Lancia Stratos) had straight cut forward gears from the factory. I have a Car & Driver test (1976). Very loud.

I think just about EVERY manual transmission car that you will see on the road will sound like a RC car in reverse, it is because of the straight teeth on the gear, and is 100% normal. From a civic DX to a ferrari, they both do that.
