Default Replacing engine from below?

Beginner here. I’m trying to learn how to replace my engine and the forum’s how to article for removing/installing engine from below without using a hoist caught my eye. From what I can tell, this is the easier and preferred way to replace an engine. If I understand the process, it requires lowering car with jacks until motor rests on crawler, then undoing mounts, and raising car back up. Repeat lowering/raising of car again for install.

It reminded me of the R/I of my suburban fuel pump, which required dropping the 42 gallon fuel tank. We used a floor jack with board bolted in, raised the jack until tank rested on board and lowered tank with jack. Is it possible to remove/install engine this way, or is there a reason for lowering/lifting the car itself? And if it is better to lower/lift the car… would it be easier to use a hoist to lift/lower the car?

the way i do my engine installs require two floor jacks, and a furniture dolly / skateboard.

So here is how I do it first disconnect everything needing to be disconnected, so the engine is only being held in by the right and left upper motor mounts.

Then lower the car all the way to the floor. To do this you'll use two floor jacks on each factory jacking point of the car.

Once the car is pretty low to the ground put either a skateboard / or some kind of plat form with wheels on it. Furniture dolly works best. Then rest the engine on the floor dolly, and undo the upper engine mounts. The jack up the car.

If everything is done correctly the engine will be on the dolly, and the car will be up and over the engine. Pull it out and do whatever you want to...

Or you can read this... Same method but does it in the front.

Demonkid, thanks for the link! Great pictures!

So, I am guessing that it is better to drop engine by lowering the whole car, instead of lowering engine with a modified floor jack?

Are there pros or cons to using a jack instead of a hoist to lift/lower car?

you can do it either way. jack the car super high and lower it(the engine) down with a jack... You'll have to do some balancing acts to get it out... unless you make some kind of jig with some wood to cradle the engine...

It's easier than you think...

The fastest i've pulled a motor is 45 mins. I've never had a hoist to use for my honda.
