Default Replacing 97 Civic DX SRS unit - compatibility question (solved)

My 97 Civic DX sedan is now sporadically throwing intermittent SRS code 8-5, which indicates an internal failure in the SRS unit, so I plan to replace it. I want to replace it with a used SRS unit as a new one will cost almost $450.

The SRS unit currently in my Civic has part number 77960-S04-N82 (see diagram below).

My question is whether I can only replace it with the same part number, or whether the 77960-S04-N81 or 77960-S02-A81 unit would also work?

Interesting, A81 says '97 only. My guess is you can probably use the N82, but sometimes this stuff just doesn't work that way. Weird also, N doesn't have a specific country code (for ECUs it means factory reprogrammed, no particular market) A designates USA, C designates Canada.

I think you meant N81 above.

I made this thread because, in WTB threads I created, I'm getting conflicting information about compatibility, one person saying I must match specific part number and another person saying the N81 unit will also work. I'm hoping somebody can give me a definitive answer.

You're right, I did.

Have you tried car-part? Sometimes it's good for cross referencing stuff like that.

I took a quick look at that site but did not immediately see a way to get my question answered there. I certainly could have missed something. More guidance?

Edit: After entering my VIN at the cart-part site, both the N82 and N81 units were listed. However, C81 was too and my diagram indicates that it is only for Civics without a passenger air bag. I'm still confused.

In a WTB thread I posted, a guy offering to sell me a N81 unit provided the part page link below as evidence that the N81 unit will work as a replacement for my N82 unit. I think it looks promising. What do you guys think?

Honestly i've never really used car-part to check compatibility, but I know other people that have, I didn't have much luck figuring it out either. You might want to PM NOFX or DeSchlong though, I believe both are pretty good with getting information out of it. I'm not sure why C81 was listed, it's Canadian market besides the fact, I think we were the only country to get just driver's side air bags on some CX models, other countries either got both or none.

I'd also say that looks promising.

Hi, I noticed that you were asking if 77960-S02-A81 would also work. Does that mean that you have found that module online? I am currently searching for an SRS unit with that exact number for my 97 civic DX coupe. I have been unsuccessful. I ordered one that had the number 77960-S02-A81-M3 and it didn't work. Anywhere you might be able to refer me to in order to find the module?
Thanks

I wonder if RonJ can follow up with some information on what finally worked for his vehicle?

Sorry for not following up. I purchased the used 77960-S04-N81 SRS unit taken from a 96 Civic. The unit has worked perfectly fine without throwing any SRS codes since January 30, 2011.

Too bad I didn't know about this sooner I would have sold you mine dirt cheap. How much are these things worth? I have the whole system with airbags.

The guy sent me the SRS unit free and also paid the shipping. I ended up PayPal'ing him $40 just for being such an incredibly nice guy. You find really nice people on these forums.
