Default Remove Power Steering

I just wanted to know how to temporarily remove power steering. Do I just need to take the belt off? Anyone have ideas and opinions about no power steering?

So you just want to take the belt off?

If you take the belt off, then you basically have no power steering. If you want to remove everything then you will have to reroute the lines back into the rack. PM me if you need help. I think there is a great walk through on here somewhere. You can search for it.

No power steering really feels good through tight turns and just everyday driving. I love it. I'm sure most will say the same.

Hope that helps some.

if you remove the power steering on a car that was equipped with power steering in the first place, the steering is going to be really hard. however, a car that came equipped without power steering will be alot easier to turn the wheel, because the steering was designed to work without power steering.

So did mine. I have re ran the lines yet but the only time its a pain is when I go home after I workout @ the gym. Otherwise I love the feeling. I tried going back to power steering and I nearly crashed because I became so accustomed to feeling the road.

It's not much worse than a regular manual rack.

If im not mistaken, isnt it bad to remove power steering from a rack designed to be run by powered steering... ? I guess temporary would be ok... but if you want to do it often just pickup a non p/s rack... power steering is for girly men

If you're going to do it, do it right. I don't agree with everthing in this thread, but I haven't done my swap yet so I have no room to talk. Has to wait till spring.

this is the post i was going to look for, if you read it carefully nobody really knows the long term effects of leaving the ps rack only half full(or less) with fluid. this is what has kept me from doing this mod. and the problem w/ just putting a manual rack in is that they are 19:1 while the ps racks are 16:1.
keep this post going b/c i want to figure out a compromise to doing something like this.

the only reason it's hard to turn a power rack without the belt on is because of all the fluid and pressure you're fighting against. I have just the belt removed now and it feels great. Kinda hard to parallel park, but I like a little struggle here and there. After removing the entire assembly, most run a breather line to a resevoir so you're not fighting any presure build up, which makes it almost as easy as power steering.

And it doesn't hurt the rack, just make sure you leave some fluid in there

then i am going to do this, is there any advantage to replacing my 94 civic ps rack w/ an itnegra one first or should i just do it w/ my existing rack? also, if it feels as easy as a p.s rack, wouldnt that kind of defeat the purpose of it being manual? ive never spent more than about 10 min in a manual equipted car and it was hyundai at that, so i dont know the real advantages to manual steering first hand, but from what ive read you have better control for aggressive driving. can someone help me out w/ alttile more insight.

Easiest- power steering

Not bad- manual steering

about the same as manual- power steering removed with a rack breather/resevoir line to avoid fighting against pressure

little bit harder than above- no power steering, just re routed lines back to the rack

kinda pointless yet I still do it- removing belt. You feel more of the road and free some power. Removing the whole unti is best, and not too hard. Just waiting to do mine whenever I quit skating for a second

if the looped line and breather are gonna give me the same feeling and control as a true manual unit, and low fluid wont damage the rack, i am definatley going to do this... one major advantage being that i can retain my 16:1 ratio on my ps rack.
and just to clarify my one remaining question, is there any point to replacing my 10 year old rack with a unit off a newer integra? if im taking the pump out anyway will my rack be in good enough conditon?... 98+ itr p.s. racks can be found for under 200$. i am thinking that a newer unit will feel better and last longer than mine. thanks alot for your help

I don't know about putting in a new unit.

But, that is exactly why people convert power racks to manual. You have the feel of manual, the ratio of power, and a good compromise of turning difficulties, or lack thereof

about how many horses will i gain if i just take the belt off?
or no horses at all?
Yeah, some dude dynoed it. Taking the belt off frees the ponies. Removing the whole pump unit and hoses frees up some weight and also eases the strength it takes to turn the wheels- not fighing against a still pump.

Yes, just take off the belt. Will be harder to turn when still, but a lot better when moving. ASAP, remove the whole unit OR just remove thebelt at the track!

doesn't power steering shut off eventually at a certain MP? manual steering is a pain only when parallel parking....
