Rebuilding motor.. okay to use oil pump again?
Hey guys i'm building a b20vtec. I have my oil pump for b16, how often do they go bad? Can I reuse the oil pump because i don't really have the money for AAAANYTHING that isn't necessary.
Also, is it cool to use basic RTV as the oil pump gasket when i install it? because i didn't see any gasket around the oil pump but there was some gray lookin sealant i scraped off. (Hondabond?) this is the first time the oil pump has been off.
so...
- cool to reuse oil pump?
- cool to use RTV as a gasket for oil pump?
thanks much!

Re: Rebuilding motor.. okay to use oil pump again?
No! that is one of the most important things you want to replace in a rebuild. If you reuse it and it fails later down the line and blows up you engine then you are out a whole lot more money. Just do it right the first time and spend the extra 200 bucks and get a vtec oil pump. I did the same thing when I was young and dumb. I did a timing belt job on my B18 and said "Hey! I dont need to replace the waterpump it will never go out!" 2 weeks down the road my water pump seased snaped my timing belt and sent a valve through my piston and bent a few more valves in the process. All because I didn't spend 40 bucks on a water pump. Just saying. When replacing the oil pump use honda bond. hope this helps.

thanks so much for the help dude.
alright i will get a new oil pump. ebay says 90ish for a b20 oil pump. 70ish for b16.
also new waterpump/tensioner/belt for b16 right?
i'll look into hondabond. hope it's cheap.
someone said the b20 oil pump was 'stronger' than the b16 oil pump. have you heard anything about this? i want the best parts for my car even if i have to eat ramen noodles for another 6 months.
thank so much for the shouts dude!

X2 ^ nah the vtec oil pumps are built to move more oil than the non-Vtec pumps thats why they are more expensive than the non-vtec pumps, But I have built man LS/vtec's and used just an LS pump and had no issues.

so I need a vtec oil pump.
i am thinking.....
96+ B18C oil pump.
96+ B18C timing belt.
will these work for my uses?
i am using a b16 oil pump for the first 100 miles of break in to catch any chunks of crap... I SWEAR TO THE HONDA GODS, NO MORE THAN 100 MILES!!!!
i just need to move the car across town where i can store it til i get money for these expensive oem parts.
