Default pulling obd1 cel code

This is probably going to end up being a compounded question (yet another "my vtec doesn't work yo" thread).

background:

chipped p28 ecu (FaceTuned)

Whenever I get in the higher rpm's I get a CEL instead of vtec. Whenever I shut off the car the CEL clears and will come back on around 5200 rpm's. If I leave the car running and do the paperclip trick, the CEL stays solid; no blinking. Is there another way to pull this code? I have a hunch that its a code 20 or 21, but I want to make sure before I start digging into things I don't have to.
