Problems putting car in reverse
I own a 99 civic si and tonight i was leaving work and everything is fine. I get home and i always back the car into the drive way. Well, I couldnt get the car into reverse at all. Im curious to hear opinions on what it could be. All forward gears are good and smooth. Reverse has always been a little tough.

well i mean it is normal for it to be a little hard to get it to go in. After putting the car in first and moving a little bit forward did it go in. But if you couldn't get it to go in if you tried that than yeah you have a problem. First things first is to change the transmission fluid. If it is just hard to get it to go in that is probly the problem but if there is grinding when you try to get it to go in it is probly the syncro

Re: Problems putting car in reverse
is there some type of tranny filter? someone had mentioned that to me a few months back that "it could be a cloged filter" now ive never heard of that, but i wanted to throw that out there. Ill try it in the morning as far as having it rolling and trying reverse. But I mean I cant even but the stick in reverse, it wont let me.

Re: Problems putting car in reverse
For manual transmissions, we do not have a filter. Only the automatic guys are stuck with one.
(Sorry I have no advice on the bigger problem.)

Re: Problems putting car in reverse
i have the same problem with my b16 tranny. I drove it fine one day, then the next day i wake up to drive it no reverse. WTF?? ok I am going to open up the case and see whats wrong internally. I just put in a gsr tranny. in addition to that my buddy had the same problem with his b16 tranny. He said that it took about 2 months of forcing it to go in and eventually it did.

Re: Problems putting car in reverse
well i did get it to go....at first it would grind like a bitch. Id have to screw around with letting the clutch in slowly while pulling it into reverse. As I was experiementing with it, i noticed that if i yank it hard to the right and down it would go in easier. I dont know if the more i do this the easier it may get? I just dont have the funds to bring it to the shop.

mine will intermitently do this as well. but eventually after the 2nd-3rd time it will go in but it will grind. This doesnt happen every time though.

Re: Problems putting car in reverse
its damn hard making sure I dont put myself in position where I dont need reverse. I found myself in a pinch a few times today, and its kinda embaressing...lol. Ive gotta really screw with the damn thing. There are just so many things I want to do to the car. Yet lack of knowledge and money is the drawback. I appreciate the suggestions. Im gonna keep tinkering with it. Im also gonna change the fluids this weekend.

could be....throw out bearing.....shifter bushings....bent shift linkage....ect. mine did the same thing...(I had bent shift linkage) put it in first, drive forward as much as u can.....a few feet is enough if you can, then try to put it into reverse. that's how i got mine to do it. it only did it to me on the random though.

Re: Problems putting car in reverse
yea I sometime have to slowly engage the clutch to get it in reverse as well. It just irritates me because this will be the first summer ive had the car. Id like to enjoy it for the summer opposed to having to do work or screw around with ****.

My car did the same thing but all I had to do was let the clutch out a little bit and it would go in. It would grind but it would go

Bump on the problem, I'm going through the same thing right now too. The car was perfectly fine one day, then the next day in the morning to go to work, reverse just stopped working. It goes over to the right, but won't actually go down into the gear anymore. The fluid in the tranny is fine as well.

If you turn off the engine does it go in fine? If so your clutch is not completely disengaging from the flywheel, try bearing, new clutch fluid, clutch adjustment, or a complete new clutch...

Same here. It kinda feels like it went in, but I'm still in Neutral. Also, when I let out the clutch out a little there's a grinding noise - small, but there.
It happens to me randomly too, I put it into first and then reverse, still no dice. I had to drive forward before it'll work

Nope, even with the car off, it still won't go in and it has a new clutch, bearing and flywheel. Also, fluid on the tranny and the clutch are fine and to level as well.

Re: Problems putting car in reverse
The problem with the r- gear comes with the missing synchronisation in this gear. My civic has this problem too but not always. It helps to go in n-position, to shift in the first gear, go again neutral and try again with reverse. This "trick" helped me often.

Re: Problems putting car in reverse
Just a thought but you are all saying problems with syncro's. One of my friends old trucks you used to have to rev it up some then pop it in to gear with the clutch. Some one should try that. And for the guy tazeat these cars are hydro clutch's so there is no adjustment sorry. But could also be bent clutch fork and so on. I'm gonna say its probably the pressure plate with a combo of the throw out bearing going out more then a syncro though. Try changing the trans fluid and see what happens.
