Default Play in clutch pedal..

There is about 1/2inch of travel in my clutch pedal before it starts to operate. It's obviously spring loaded, and will rise to the top if you remove your foot. But when you push down on the pedal, it goes down a half inch before it gets hard to push (and actuates the throwout bearing/clutch..)

Is there an adjustment for this? It's a hydraulic clutch.

Yes there is. You get your 12mm open ended wrench out and lay on your back in the drivers foot well. You will see where the clutch mastercylinder push-rod attaches to the clutch pedal. On that push-rod is a jam-nut (shown in silver below) that locks the rod from turning. If you loosen the jam nut, you will now be able adjust the engagement point for the clutch pedal. If you turn the push rod clockwise (as if you were sitting in the drivers seat looking forward), it will raise the clutch action up off the floor. If you turn the rod counter clockwise, it lower it (not what you want). Make the adjustment and then lock the jam-nut back down and test drive.

I had 4 cars that were all stick, and I like to adjust them all so all the clutches have the same grab point. This is how it's done on a hydraulic clutch.

there's also a stopper nut under the dash i think its a 12mm u can screw it in so the stopper hits earlier taking the first couple inches of slop out.

What car???

Don't *****-nilly adjust the push rod. Adjust the clutch pedal height as detailed in your service manual. Not doing so risks wearing out your clutch prematurely.

Adjusting your pushrod is exactly the same as messing with the adjuster nut at the transmission on a cable clutch car. As long as you leave a little amount of free play, your not going to wear out anything unless you do something *****-nilly.

Technically your supposed to adjust both to the following specs:

- Loosen locknut A, and back off the clutch switch (or adjusting bolt) until it no longer touches the clutch pedal.
- Loosen locknut B, and turn the push rod in or out to get the specified stroke (A) and height (C) at the clutch pedal.
- Tighten locknut B.
- Turn the clutch switch (or adjusting bolt) in until it contact the clutch pedal.
- Turn the clutch switch in ad additional 1/4 – 1/2 turn.
- Tighten locknut A.

- (A) Stroke at pedal: 142.5 – 152.5 mm (5.61 – 6.00 in).
- (B) Total clutch pedal free play: 9.0 – 15.0 mm (0.35 – 0.59 in) includes the pedal play 1 – 7 mm (0.04 – 0.28 in).
- (C) Clutch pedal height: LHD: 184 mm (7.24 in) to the floor and RHD: 209 mm (8.23 in) to the floor.
- (D) Clutch pedal disengagement height: LHD: 46 mm (1.81 in) minimum to the carpet and RHD: 76 mm (2.99 in) minimum to the carpet.

wow thanks for all the shouts guys!

i love HT we need HT t-shirts.

I will adjust my pedal next time i work on my car.

the reason i asked is because sometimes when i get excited i don't push the pedal ALLLLL the way down to the floor and there's a complaining gear (usually 4th to 5th.) This should fix it! I have roughly 1/2inch of play before the pedal does anything.

thanks again HT.
