OEM Honda VTEC specs call that for VTEC to engage, the water temperature must be above 140ºF (standard operating temperature is approximately 190ºF).

VTEC will NOT engage when the engine is ice cold unless the "water temp check" is "unchecked" in a tuned ECU.

Replace the Water Temp sensor, then reset the battery, the CEL will shut off, and VTEC will come back.

That won't work, if the water temp sensor's fucked, it's fucked, resetting the ECU won't change that.

That doesn't mean ****, it could be broken and outputting an improper voltage or something.

Replace the water temp sensor, I can almost guarantee you that's the problem.

Yeah, right next to where the upper radiator hose goes into the block.

EDIT:
I just double checked that part # because I was looking for it earlier and couldn't find it - it's the right one, OBD-II Si - but it shouldn't matter, the sensors are the same between OBD-I and OBD-II.

BUT, ON THE FLIPSIDE

I looked up the same diagram for a '94 Del Sol DOHC VTEC (OBD-I B16) and in the same diagram where it shows the water temp sensor - there's none in the OBD-I diagram.

That part number is for a 99/00 B16A2, not an A3, and I don't think a JDM one either.

@ OP:
How long have you had this swap like this? How long have you had the CEL on?

I can't find the water temp sensor on the OBD-I B16A3 block (or in your case JDM B16A). It doesn't make sense that it WOULDN'T have one but if it does it's not in the same place as it is on the OBD-II models, and I can't find the damn thing .

Maybe somebody else can help me to help you here...

It's under the VTEC solenoid a bit and to the right a bit - not the green plug though.

You can tell as soon as you pull it out - it's a pointy looking thing with a thermometer at the tip.

im broke so can u use one off a ls at the junkyard cause i can get it free due to my best friends dad owns it

Yeah, I just checked it, the OBD-II LS and the OBD-II Si motors both have the same part number for the temp sensor.

Though like I said, I can't find a diagram or place to buy an OBD-I water temp sensor anywhere, I can't find the damn thing in terms of diagrams on OBD-I B-Series motors...

Though yeah, the water temp sensors will be the same, so you can just pull one off an LS. Though like I said, I can't find it for **** on OBD-I B series motors, maybe I'm just looking in all the wrong places...but yeah, interchangeable.

No idea, the OBD-I diagrams of the water pump aren't showing a water temp sensor like the OBD-II diagrams are - so I'm .

Theres the diagram off a 94 Del Sol (OBD1 B16A3). Its the same part # 37870-PJ7-003. (#18 in the diagram)

you sure you dont just have some plugs mixed up? The Vtec plugs and the CTS plugs are the same.

CTS = Coolant Temp Sensor

The VTEC oil pressure sensor is right next to it...well sorta right next to it...anyways, it's GREEN, you want the NOT GREEN one. You can tell real easily once you pull it out, it's like a pointy cone type thing (sorta looks like a spark plug if you look at it a certain way) but its got a thermometer sensor at the tip.

Those are the actual part #'s so you can just write them down and take them to a local Honda dealership, or you can order them online.

Either way, buy 'em and be done with it.

If you plan on pulling it off a junker, any B series OBD-I engine (before 96) will work and I'm 99% sure (though not positive) any OBD-II B-series will also.

Though it's only 30-35 bucks from the Honda dealership...so I'd just buy the sensor and O-ring from there...
