oil problem

Default oil problem

hello . i have a 97 civic . recently i;ve been having oil leak problems . so today i went under the car and see if there was any leaks coming out (car was on) . couldnt see any. but when i drove around and parked for awhile, looked under the car. there was drops. i did see some left over oil hanging from the oil pump and oil drain plug. not sure wheres it coming from . can anyone help please.

Could be something as simple as needing a new crush washer on the drain plug, or the valve cover gasket leaking out of one corner and running down the block. Check those things first.

OR your oil pan gasket could be no good or a few nuts/bolts over-torqued causing a leak from the oil pan.

i didnt see any oil coming from the oil pan though.

Yeah, but you said you saw it wet around the drain plug, it could have dripped up above and collected near the plug. And the oil pump is hidden inside the oil pan, how could you see that it was dripping from there?

the oil pump isnt inside the oil pan. i looked at the book and they said it was along side of the oil pan

Well what he is trying to tell you is that your oil pan bolts right on your oil pump and that's the side its coming from. Also to help you better find the leak look under your car farther back from behind the engine and you can see where the wind blows the oil to when your driving. Just look whats in front of it and that also gives you a general idea of where its coming from.

Is your block have oil going down it? Or is it just in the general area of the oil pan? Maybe the oil is coming from the cam or crank seals in your timing belt area. Take the cover off and see if its leaking in there.

Can you take pictures and post them?

the top is all good. no oil leaks on the top its coming from the bottom. hella whack dude.

check the oil pressure sensor.... if everything on top is good though all you have left is the oil pump, you said oil pan is good... soo the front and rear main seal.... if those are good then check to see if you have wet, oily axles you could be leaking from your axle seals, when driving it'll drip on to the axle(s) and then with force be thrown on to your oil pan causeing it to collect right where the drain plug is...

i do have greasy axles on my driverside. the boot is ripped. planning to get that fixed . do you think thats the problem ?

Getting it fixed will be the only way to find out....but also, i didnt read anyone telling u about ur oil filter...if you havent give it a glimpse see if any oil around there.

Ya...I'll tell you. I've been having oil problems myself! lol. So far everything everyone has mentioned sounds good. Here's the list I went through checking all my stuff:

Check the top for drip down first

if that's clear

Oil pan gasket
Oil pan (could be warped? mine is cause it was in a wreck, and got hit...is it jdm? or usdm? the bolt patterns are different, and if it's jdm and it got hit...it's more likely to be warped if it got hit)
oil filter (do you have an oil cooler?/etender for a turbo feed?)
rear main seal (just replaced on mine)
front main seal (also just replaced on mine)

The axels honestly I hadn't thought about...the grease is almost assuridly the torn cv boot. But ya...if the axel seals are gone...it'll be leaking oil as well out of there, making it very difficult to determine which is which...although the oil would probably get blown all over that side of the block. Should be somewhat noticable... Pictures would be most helpful...

So long as there's not a huge hole in the side of your block u can see your pistons and rods through...it shouldn't be that serious! haha. Just make sure you watch your oil level, and oil pressure guage

thanks for all the help guys. my friend checked where the leaks are coming from and it aint pretty. forgot where he said they were coming from ahha .
