hey there guys i'm doing my first oil pan removal and was wondering if it's nesessary to apply gasket sealant? i've been searching and found some people who say yes and some who say no so i just want to make sure. if so what kinda of sealant to use if i don't get the honda sealant. (the closest honda dealership from me is 40 min away).

i used gasket sealant when i changed my oil pan. pick it up at any wal mart of parts store

you really don't need it but if your replacing it without a car lift it would be good to use just to hold the gasket in place so its not moving around on you while your installing it back on the engine but if your new to it i would use it good luck to you

If not Hondabond, use a good quality RTV sealant.

Better than possible leaks latter on.

As said, a little sealant to just keep the gasket in place when installing is ok. But you don't need to use a whole tub on it.
Keep in mind too not to overtighten the nuts when you put your pan back together. I went through 3 gaskets thinking they where bad and found out I had just plain overtightened them.

alright so i got all the bolts, piping off but now i can't take the oil pan off. it's like its stuck on there. tried a flat head but couldn't get it in there. anyone run into this prob? if so what methods would you suggest to take it off? (yes all the bolts screws are off, i double checked.) thanks

Hit the side of the oil pan with a rubber mallet.

okay so i finally got it done. took me awhile though. hopefully it doesn't leak. just wondering but i was told to just hand tight the screws/bolts. is this safe? cause thats all that i did.

if you felt the bolts were nicely seated and there are no leaks, then yeah, you will be safe!

check it for the next couple days if you are worried and check under your car whenever you leave somewhere after an extended period

use a torque wrench, then you you know that it's properly tightened

so i checked today and notice that it was leaking a little bit. now do i just tighten that spot only or should it redo the whole sequence? thanks

did you tighten them down in the order they show in the manual?

Those bolts MUST be properly torqued per the manual. Refer to this thread for the torque amounts, looks like 9 foot pounds will do it. There is no order.

oil pan is a PITA, do it right once or you'll leak forever, i can still smell oil burn at higher RPMS (and my rings are fine).

if you get an RTV make sure its the black kind that is oil resistant or something like that.
