Default O2 sensor cost and installation?

I have a 2000 Civic with 37,000 miles. The check engine light came on and I took it to a shop for the reason. I was told that it was the O2 sensor that is before the catalytic converter not the one behind it. They said the cost for the sensor is $300. I declined because the car is running fine right now. Is this price reasonable and is it difficult to install this sensor? Thank you.

The sensor is sometimes rusted-in and you should have a special socket to do it that allows for the wires to come out. Make sure you lube it gernerously prior to trying to take it out if you're a do-it-yourselfer.

damn 300 is a lot...you should check craigslist for parting out 96-00 civics, or you can order one from ebay, which is about 30 bucks maybe less..yeah if you are a do-it-yourselfer, get the socket made to take out an o2 sensor. if it hasent been taken out for awhile, it might break and get stuck. BE SURE TO LUBE BEFORE TAKING IT OUT WILL MAKE THINGS MORE EASIER!!!!!

Changing the O2 sensor is super easy. Grab some WD-40 and a 22mm wrench; at least I think it is a 22mm wrench. I have purchased from this website before with very good luck. There are mixed opinions about using aftermarket O2 sensors but the one's that I have purchased work just fine. Some may require a little splicing but that is not hard at all.

Thanks for the information - I thought that was high. Two questions - here is a Bosch online for $70:

Bosch Before Cat. Oxygen Sensor 1992-2005 Honda Civic
UNIVERSAL OXYGEN SENSOR -- Original Equipment Replacement
Fits: BEFORE Catalyst, Requires Reuse Of Old Connector.
Location: Before Cat.

Also, is there a DIY for replacing this sensor?

theres not much to a DIY changing o2 sensor, just use a wrench or socket, and spray some lubricant, let it soak, and screw new o2 sensor on, and plug it, if you want reset your ecu. GOOD LUCK

All you have to do is match the four wires; the sensor should come with instructions. The new sensor and the old sensor will match up differently. For example, the new sensors green wire might not go to the old sensors green wire. I know I've seen a diagram on this forum before but I can't remember where and I don't have it bookmarked. I'll do a little searching and see what I come up with. In the end, a little splicing and wrench turning to save a lot of money is always a good deal.

EDIT:

I came up with this:

Stock o2 Sensor / Bosch Universal o2

Black (heater wire) --> White
Black (heater wire) --> White
Green (ground wire) --> Gray
White (signal wire) --> Black
