Noob Q bout Oil Filter Install
Hi guys I just had a simple question. What would happen if I forgot to fill the oil filter halfway with oil when installing it? I did oil the seals but forgot to fill half of the filter with oil.
Thanks in advance

Re: Noob Q bout Oil Filter Install (flipp117)
nothing.... i thought they just recommend that you put oil on the gasket so it will be easier to remove the next time u change the filter. I've changed my oil filter numerous of times and never filled my oil filter w/ oil before the install

it's called charging the filter. It's just a precaution to have the complete 4.2qt of oil or however much ur car holds in the engine and not in the filter. I just think its necessary to put a layer of new oil around the rubber gasket of the new filter to ease the pain of taking the filter off after use. I just put in a little extra oil to compensate for charging the filter.

forgive me if i am wrong, but what does it have to do with removing the filter the next time?
i always thought that oiling the gasket was to make a proper seal to the motor.
the gasket is not holding the filter up there.
also the motor oil all goes through the filter so i dont think it has anything to do with it not being in the motor and in the filter instead.
i think the reason for doing this is for the motor to immediatly get oil from the filter and not be dry for even a second.

yes, that's the reason.
