Default Minime y7/y8 help. Wiring it all up. d16y7 d16y8

I have a 1997 Civic DX hatchback and am looking forward to swapping in a 99 ex head. So far I have the head, internals, and intake manifold. I am planning on getting a 96-98 p2p ecu from an ex. I am also getting a new headgasket (y8) valve cover gasket, and timing belt. My question is would I need to get the ex wiring harness for it? Or is there a way I can run custom wiring on it and have it not throw any CEL's. So far I know of three wires: (1) Vtec Solenoid, (2) Vtec psi, and (3) knock sensor. Does anyone know if there are any more wires that I am gonna need to run? I already know i need a knock sensor from an ex or any b series engine to put somewhre on the block to avoid the knock sensor CEL. I am unsure about the secondary 02 sensor problem though. I heard from someone that if you use a p2p ecu, you will run into problems with either the primary or secondary 02 sensor CEL. The reason why this puzzles me is that if im not mistaken, the ex and dx/cx/lx both have two 02 sensors, one in the exhaust manifold and one in the catalytic converter, the only difference is that the dx/lx/cx have the cat mounted vertically right by the exhaust manifold. Any help would be appreciated.

Cliffs notes - doing a y7 to y8 minime. What do I wire up (what wires, #of wires) to avoid any CEL's.

just use the plugs from a ex harness (or u can buy "pig tail" plugs from the dealer etc) and run custom wires to the ecu. i heard u can just ground the knock sensor wire instead of hooking up to a sensor... but i dont kno for sure

thanks, what are the "pig tail plugs" and do you know exactly how to run custom wires to the ecu? is it splicing and soldering?

pig tails are just the actual plugs themselves and a few inches of wiring hanging off them. just buy some 14ga wire and solder them to the plugs. run them in some looming thru the fire wall and to the ecu. i was ghetto, and just stripped the wire and shoved it into them into the ecu plugs and taped them in

Sounds good, i think i can find the plugs from a junkyard or something, i am gonna try to make the IACV plug soon, i think i just need to cut off one of my wires and run it into a 2 wire plug instead of 3 (on all y7 engines)

sounds good, what ecu will you be running, are you gonna do the obdII-->ObdI jumper harness or p2p with ex wiring harness, how are you gonna do the knock sensor also?

For starters I will run the P2P ECU
I guess I will wire in the knock sensor, then ground it to the frame,,, with my compression its definately not going to be happy if I put it in the block

you can just ground the knock sensor in the block? like how do you do that? just mount the wire on a bolt in the block?

You wire the knock sensor as usual,, but instead of installing it into the block, you just ground it. I plan on mounting it on a metal tab on my fire wall

oh ok sounds good, so just mount that on a ground somwhere in the car? and run two wires for the VTEC psi, and VTEC solenoid? What about iacv wires just cut the orange one off the 3 pin connector and find a two wire connector off of an ex and use that to plut into the IACV?

from what I gather:

you run one wire for the VTEC pressure switch(pin CYPM)

One wire for the knock sensor(pin KS)

and you cut the orange wire going to the IACV, and wire in a two wire plug

i think thats basically it other than yanking the orange switch out of the ecu and putting it in another slot and maybe the solenoid?

yes, you need the y8 ecu from the respective year range of your car 1996-1998 or 1999-2000, you also need the head, intake manifold, exhaust manifold (optional), head gasket, timing belt, wiring harness, knock sensor from a d16y8

another thing to note is if you dont want to put in a knock sensor, you can just ground it from the ecu
